Overclocking an Intel Mobile Processor?

hi guys, i just fixed a laptop for a friend, (replace mobo and upgraded processor to 2.4ghz in dell 4150) and he gave me his old processor along with $100. i thought about selling the processor for a while but now i'm thinking about keeping it. i got an Asus P4P800 Deluxe that i want to put it in. but the processor has no integrated heat shield. i looked up the stepping and intel says it's got "C" stepping. so i'm wondering if i should go ahead and try to see how far i can take this thing or should i sell it? i want to see if it can do as well as my mobile XP 2600+ (2.4ghz on air). do you guys think it'll work in a desktop system? i've seen the 1.6's work and i wish i got his 2.4 but i figured it'd still be good (if it works) for at least 2.4-2.6 ghz. any suggestions?

I have seen this before. Some of the fourm members did this, though I didn't follow it very closely. IIRC, they oc'd pretty well. Since the heatspreader isn't installed, there may be a spacing problem, so make sure you make contact with the HSF. If you try it, let us know how it does. Peace.

As JSSheridan said, make sure your HSF makes contact with the CPU. If it does, then 3GHz is easily attainable (3.4 is probable). The only problem is that the multiplier will default to 12x if it is a P4M (if it is a mobile celeron, it will use the 20x multiplier), so you need a mobo that supports high FSB.

I have a P4M 1.6 that is running at 2.3 at 1.375V; the only thing holding me back is FSB support on my mobo.

i wish i could get it to 3ghz. but i only have DDR 333 at the moment to put in that board, i have kingston hyperx 3000 ram but that's in my amd rig. i just need a heatsink and i'm good to go. i missed the last day of the SVC deal for the SLK-947-U by just a few hours, that morning i was going to order it at work but decided to wait till the evening after i get off and do it from home. they raised the price to 36.99 that evening. so i have to find another cheap heatsink now. any suggestions?
