oops, I was going through "my posts" list and found that one, didn't notice the date... (hate it when that happens)

Why do we overclock...

1.... Higher Clocks means higher MIPS and MFLOPS.... in other words, more horsepower and more torque.... but plz put them into use... like more details... or more AA or something omg...

2.... Warranty voidance is a full BS tale....

Nearly all of us on this forum void our warranty the second we install our processor by not using the stock heatsink. Why? because the stock heatsinks are not nearly as good as what you can get for an extra 40 dollars. So overclocking aside we apparently don't care much about our warranties anyways.

For me I never really did much overclocking till I bought my Manchester X2 3800. At 2.0Ghz a core it wasn't exactly blazing. I was able to pair it with some DDR500 and overclock it to 2.5Ghz with a tiny voltage increase and it served me at those speeds from day 1 (spring 2006) till Summer 2009. In a way overclocking can extend the performance lifetime of your CPU. Sure you can shorten the life span, especially if you bump the voltage, but what good would extending the life of CPU do for me? By overclocking I can stretch the time between upgrades. I only need it to survive 5 years max, and that would be pushing it, I don't need my CPUs to last me 10 years.

You do have a point especially about the most modern of CPUs, I just upgraded to a Phenom II X4 940 and I really don't feel the need to overclock it as with 2 more cores, a superior architecture, and an extra 500mhz it is blazing compared to my X2 3800. Also my computer, my CPU isn't holding it back, its the video card.

having a 8 month old processor that is still faster than any of the current stock options.... that is why i OC =]

These threads are ridiculous. I love when "IT Professionals" look down upon overclocking. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill.

I don't currently overclock; either I grew out of it or or there's nothing worth pushing my current hardware to do better. (Crysis just isn't that fun...) But I used to. And that's not to say you should make it your business to go around telling people it's stupid. Now things just aren't the same. Using a pencil to cross the L1 bridges on your processor? Using a piece of wire to short two pins on the underside of the chip? Classic bragging rights...

Guess what "IT Prof. Ant"? If overclocking was such a bad idea, I don't think AMD would be selling processors with unlocked multipliers... I don't think XFX and all these other video card companies would be selling pre-OC'ed cards and these motherboard companies running BIOS updates to further OCing.

To be honest, this seemed like a troll thread. Let's let this die.

Edited: ...cannot carry two conversations at once.

Maybe I don't always notice the performance boost, but I do get the peace of mind knowing that I am really getting the most out of my hardware (and money).

This is impossible for them to prove, and we justify not telling them to ourself in that we actually save them money by making it LESS likely to fail (due to improved cooling)

Normally I would say that "not telling the truth" is bad and unethical, but in this case, we are doing them a favor, and it should not void the warranty. You can't even buy a worse HSF than stock that I know of !

I agree for once with you.

I OC to get the best performance possible at various voltage levels. I maximize performance/watt/dollar and get a system that is faster and more energy efficient than what is available at retail that is also extremely stable because of the stress testing that goes along with over clocking.

There are lots of them. frostytech

AM2 stock cooler is better than at least half of the other coolers on that list. Stock is 17C over ambient, the worst one on their list is 46.6C over ambient.
Core 2 Duo stock cooler is 49.2C over ambient at 150W, worst cooler tested is 73.8C over ambient.

They're probably looking at the stuff you find when you sort newegg coolers by price. $8 LGA 775 cooler.

28 months ago an E6600 was still pretty expensive. So I got myself an E4300 and a Tuniq Tower 120 for about 130 ?, clocked the E4300 to 3,1 GHz with stock voltages and enjoyed an inexpensive, stable and fast system since then. No problems, no crashes, works like a charm for 28 months now and saved me a lot of money.

I think I'm going to go find a thread to dig up from the grave. Everyone else is doing it this week, I might as well get in on the necro action myself.

you also cannot buy a worse "thermal paste" than the gum chunk they have on there.

I overclock so I can start talking about it to my wife and she "tunes me out". Bliss and peacefullness reigns supreme for about an hour.

In addition to that I got into OC by way of spending less money on something I enjoy doing (working with and on computers). I get more satisfaction out of improving something that already works.

Time is not a factor for me as it would be spent working (I am essentially on salary) overtime to do things that I can do the next day or that has no real deadline. Or it would be spent plaing a game or some other form of entertainment. So essentially, for me at least, it is a win/win situation. I save a bit of cash and I get to spend time doing something I enjoy doing.

Note: I did read through all the posts and this is an old post LOL.

I overclock because I'm trying to get every last bit of performance I can out of a chip (without killing it of course). It is a better deal for me to spend a little time OC'ing and then enjoy the fruits of that labor over the next year or two I have that system. It's true that just opening a web page isn't really any faster, but my video encodes take a lot less time, and when I'm working (photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver) it's the difference between click, wait, click, wait, click and click, click, click. More work done in less time = more money for me = i'm done faster and can go take a nap.

@ taltimir - I'm going to try to somehow fit "gum chunk" into a sentence here in the office...

Yep, the older I get, the more time is valuable to me. If I save even just 15 minutes in my day because my PC is faster then the extra money in good parts and the void warranty is worth it.

Building computers happens to be my hobby. I earn my living working with an HP laptop equipped with an AMD Turion x2 @ 2.2 (2.4?). There's nothing exciting about it at work.
At home, overclocking is part of my hobby in video recordings. It can keep me stay up late from time to time. I've never stayed late working on my laptop!
I have no intention of hanging on a CPU which is 5-year old.

Do her eyes get that glazed-over look that my daughter's do, anytime I mention anything at all that involves a computer? Sometimes it's fun to see how fast you can make that look appear, isn't it?

I overclock to extend the life of my system. My Core i7 920 has been at stock speed since I got it and will stay that way for at least another year, but the minute it starts being too slow I'll clock it up to 3.8ghz+
