Overclocking E8400 Wolfdale from 3.0GHz to 3.6GHz gives you +.2 in Vista score and changes your results from 5.6 to 5.8!.. Well, who cares... Overclocking is fun since you test your system for stability, performance, etc. If done properly you can get a performance boost and/or extend the day when you'd need to upgrade.

I and many others overclock for STATS!

Check out the Distributed Computing Forum and use your spare CPU Cycles to help advance science and medical research. You might even help find ET.

I wonder what CPU it takes to hit a 5.9 vista experience index score.

I do it for the same reason people climb mountains "because it is there". Why not, it's fun and dangerous sometimes when you think you've gone to far. And then if you do muck it up... you get to fix it again which is fun also

One note... The only CPU's I have had die, were NOT overclocked, and all 3 were Athlon XP's, an 1800 and two 2400's, and it wasn't due to a problem installing them or overheating, they just stopped one day.

If I didn't overclock, I'd have had to spend big bucks on new hardware a few months ago. Yet here I am.

Maybe it is a bit pointless for guys with top of the line hardware, but for people like me struggling with older hardware? It's a godsend. OCing is what makes Crysis playable with tons of eye candy in my rig.

Really? I think the same thing happened to my grandfather.

There was no overheating or anything. One day, he just stopped.

I overclock because it's low-cost fun and performance.

It's kind of like fishing: everyone wants to get The Big One, the great chip that overclocks like heck and will be the talk of the forum. But, even with a lot of practice and experience, fishing is also due in no small part to sheer dumb luck.

I wonder what would happen if Intel or NewEgg sponsored a forum-wide overclocking competition. People would order CPUs of certain models at discounted prices, and the highest Windows-bootable overclock at stock voltage with air cooling wins.

(I'm assuming the results would be meaningful because the deltas between Windows-bootable and stable overclocks would be comparable amongst all the chips.)

This would sell a lot of hardware, and ATF forum members would get a nice discount.

Eh, maybe it's just a pipe dream.

Ok now back to stock settings on the videocard.. might leave the rest the way it is just for a couple days though.. heh..

I think he got bitten by the bug!

Now, all it would take for it to take hold would be to do some intensive time comsuming work (easily found stuff like video encoding/rendering or Distributed Computing).

When you see it takes only 10 hours to finish instead of 15 hours then you will know why you want to keep the OC.

Although many here OC or self-built, I'm sure we all get different pleasures out of doing this. Here's mine.

For me, it's seeing a coworker buying the following Dell for $2100 and boast about it in the office:
Q6600, 3GB RAM, 500GB HD, 1 DVD-RW, 22 inch WS monitor, 8800GT 512 for a little over two grand.

while I built the following for a friend last week:
Q6600 - $275
4gb HP RAM - $25AR
Seagate 1TB HD - $260
ip35-E - $70AR
MSI 8800GT 512 OC - $200AR
DVD RW SATA - $35
Antec Neo HE 500 - $35AR
P182 case - $60AR
Tuniq Tower 120 - $50 with shipping
2x120mm fans - $10
Acer 22" x2 (dual monitor setup) - $230x2 = $460
Brother HL 2140 Laser - $50AR
keyboard+mouse - $25
======
Total: $1555

The setup is overclocked to 3.25Ghz on Q6600. This just puts a big smile on my face -owned!

i would agree... its a chore I do because I am cheap... and because I want more performance than a top of a line part can give me...

And if I was a millionere I Would buy a quad extreme and hire a professional to oc it to the max for me.

If I buy a Q9550 thats only running at 2.8, but it can hit 3.4-3.6 no problem, and I regularly max out my CPU, why wouldn't I? It's free performance, and I love PC performance.

Look at it this way. Would you rather your computer be running at 1.6GHz, or 3.2GHz? Same price, different performance. Wouldn't you take the free performance? (Ok, not 100% free, I had to spend $$$ on an aftermarket heatsink that wouldn't be needed at stock speeds.)

My E2140 @ 3.2GHz seems to be happily cranking along, 100% overclocked. Yes, that's double the stock speed. Incredible but true, thanks to Intel's awesome yeilds on their CPUs.

I'm testing it out on a bigger, better, UPS, to see if the occasional reboot problem goes away. I don't think it's the overclocked PC, because a different PC that was still at stock speeds also rebooted several times on the old UPS.

Well its pretty simple for me: I just want my stuff to run at its full potential. I have never once sent a single item for warranty.

Overclocking is nice because with the right chip, you can purchase something low-end, then overclock it and have it beat out something top of the line.

There are people that use programs that require massive processing power, such as 3D rendering.

Voiding a warranty isn't a big deal on a CPU; it is extremely rare for one to blow up. Many GPU manufacturers now allow overclocking without voiding the warranty.

Reasons for OC:

1. Try to get the most out of the buck, and when u can clock higher that the highest factory offering, then "I am on top of the world"
2. By 3 years, I would have upgraded the CPU, so even if it shortens the life of the CPU, I won't be able to see its death anyway.
3. It improves the FPS in games, so that translates to better gaming experience.

On a side note: I can't believe my Account in this forum is still valid after an absence of close to 7 years, and that I could still remember my password.

I got a cpu from my buddy for free it was a E2140 stock 1.6ghz dual core

Superpi stock 32 seconds kinda slow dual core

Overclocked it to 3.0ghz stock volts
SuperPi 17 seconds all around faster by alot.

Call of duty 4 frame rate about 45 to 55 frame rate at stock speed BIG LAG in alot of spots.
Overclocked around 75 to to 130 very smooth no lag

If somebody is on a tight budget well i would go with the low end cpu and overclock the crap out of it and there ya go.

Wow. It is almost a year old. Seems like yesterday.

Oh, I OC because I can and I am not afraid to do so as sometimes I can be obsessive compulsive. Fun, nerve racking, stressful, crazy, exciting and irritating at times but I seem to like it.

I overclock because i can and i will!!! I love it when people spend thousands more for a prebuilt system running at stock and can't do anything with it, i just get a kick out of that... Just pisses people off when you can kick there arse for under $1000 when you've built it yourself, lol!! I know that's not nice but who cares, people brag on their prebuilts all the time?? I figure a little payback is in order, if anyone needs to be arogant it's us not them..
