Overclocking Athlon Barton 2500+?

I just got an Albatron KX18D Pro motherboard, Athlon Barton 2500+ CPU, and Corsair 512 MB PC3200 memory.

I want to overclock the CPU. Are there any how-to-guides that explain how to do this?

Also, how do you tell if the Barton CPU is locked or not?

Go into the bios. If it won't let you change the multiplier, then it's a locked cpu. No big deal, you want to raise the fsb anyway. If you can get it up to 200 (the fsb) without changing the multi, then it's going to performance exactly like an XP3200.

What do I want to change the multiplier to if I can change it? Also, for the FSB setting, does it allow me to enter 200 to increase it or do I have to put some other numbers in? I've just read a few posts that talk about 166 x 11 and things like that and I wasn't quite sure what they were referring to. Thanks for helping me out.

I just got in on the K7VTA3 (v8) / 2500 barton deal at fry's. I can't get the thing running. I admit I'm a newbie but I just need to be pointed in the right direction. I've installed the cpu and some memory, floppy, and HD. The harddrive is from another system and already has win2k installed.

When I try to boot I get through the mem test and the post screens but as soon as windows starts to load (right at the beginning of the splash screen) the machine with go to blue screen with a "can't find disk" error... any suggestions? I got something similar on another machine and it turned out to be a HD config error (wrong sector size). I've run all the disk untilities to do the faking to the bios and that didn't seem to help.

Any Ideas? Is it a bad mobo or cpu? Please help...

You should really have a bigger, badder heatsink than the AMD hsf, to get to 2.2ghz. Although, I guess it's possible to do with the stock hsf, especially if you have really good airflow in your case. And, as pointed out, you are probably going to have to raise the cpu voltage a bit to reach a 200 fsb.

Case 1: XP 2500+
A. Multiplier locked. FSB 333. Bump it up to 400. What do you change the voltage to?

Case 2: XP 2500+
B. Multiplier unlocked. Change FSB333 to 400. What should your multiplier be set at and voltage be set at?

I would guess the windows install on the drive can't get itself in sync with new motherboard. sometimes it is very difficult to migrate a win install to a new different motherboard. I usually do a fresh windows install whenever i change motherboards. Whenever i have changed boards with different chipsets without doing a fresh install of windows it has been problematic if it worked at all.

Many people claim doing a repair install fixes the problem and leaves all your programs and preferences in tact.

To overclock the FSB alone you don't need anything except a motherboard capable of running at a 200 Mhz FSB. To overclock a processor you need a decent heatsink/fan. Contrary to what some people seem to think, AMD's retail heatsink/fans do a decent job. While I'd recommend getting a better one, there's no harm in using it if you leave the voltage at the default of 1.65 because they're the same heatsinks that ship with retail XP3200's, and that's essentially what you're turning your XP2500 into by setting the FSB to 200.

you need to format.. previous windows install can't find itself cause it doesn't recognize the new IDE controller. no boot like that.
if you want, you can try putting the hdd in your old PC and installing the new computer's drivers. then put hdd back in new PC and try booting.
otherwise, re-install windows.

THANKS!... I'll give the options a go. I guess I was just lucky last time. I wanted to avoid a reinstall, so I'll try the repair first then see what I can do.

Remember to uninstall all motherboard related drivers you can find before you try the repair install. Just cleaner that way.

I was about to sell my 2400+ to get a 2500+ to overclock the FSB, then I remembered that I only had PC2700. At the moment, I don't want to have to go through the hassle of buying more memory, while I'm still waiting for my PC2700 rebates to come through.

i think the suggestion for removing motherboard drivers, and doing a "repair installation" is a bad idea. my installs are screwed just from a clean drive. no way in hell i'd trust microsoft to clean things up for me.

for example, my outlook 2003 doesn't give me a sound when i get new mail. everything else runs perfectly. little crap like this makes me wanna reinstall everything. good thing i have ghost backups.
