I have .infs that overclock my NEC IPS to either 75hz or 83hz, both using display port. It's definitely something people should attempt. The decision to use 60hz as the display standard was really stupid. It's known that 72 fps is the minimum threshold that *all* people perceive smooth motion with rendered frames. 75hz should have been the panel standard.

Check for quality reviews. Most of the tests done against overclocked monitors have shown the frames either never get drawn or there are artefacts. Some monitors have been tested by quality sites and tested properly to show they do produce reasonable images and display all the frames sent to them but its certainly not true of most of the overclocked monitors. Its very much the sort of thing that needs a lot of research these days to make sure you get the benefits and there are a lot of claims out there that unfortunately proven wrong and a lot of people who don't know there are problems.

Could you give an example of such site perhaps? Google search proved fruitless for the monitor I bought.
75hz on this old monitor feels quite well indeed.

If you can't find a review proving the monitor does indeed produce all the frames then assume it can't. There aren't many places that do quality monitor reviews unfortunately but just occasionally you'll find reviews in odd places that do test appropriately with slow mo cameras or some other mechanism to confirm every frame is there. Check at http://www.blurbusters.com and http://120hz.net/ as starting points.

Thank you, BrightCandle, well my monitor is already bought, so I will test and reply with the results here. The monitor should arrive tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

That's weird, Ed1, I guess it's hardcoded somewhere for your monitor. Hopefully my new Philips will be able to overclock to 72/75hz.

I'm glad my old syncmaster 940bf is 75hz. It's really nice and smooth compared to the laptops screen. I downscale so 75fps on 1920x1526 is great.

Ok, overclocked this philips display. It allows me to go to 68hz without any problems, artifacts or anything, but when I try 69, it says "display cannot support this, plz switch back to 1080p60".

That CRU program is telling me that 1080p69= 160.17mhz. Could it be that the hdmi cable I have is 1.0-1.2 and is bottlenecking this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Version_comparison

Should I try with a 1.3-2.0 HDMI cable? (I have no idea what version mine is now, but it's the cheapest, not bought by me. I would really like at least 72hz).
Is it possible the connection of the display itself is HDMI 1.0-1.2 ? ;o

Bought a 1.4 HDMI cable. Still can't get past 68hz

I don't suppose there's any logic in having any rate of 61-68hz ? Would just cause disruptions? 68 is completely stable though.

Make sure you are actually getting 68hz by watching the flying saucer and looking for inconsistent jumps (or use a high speed camera capture). A lot of controllers accept a higher refresh rate but don't actually display the images.

Already tested, and yeah, all are shown. Should I stay at 68 instead of 60? Will there be any discrepancies because of that? I mean, it's a pretty non-standard refresh rate. It might conflict with Vsync, no?

Hello, so I'm getting a new display and was thinking if I could overclock it to 70hz. Has anyone tried it with similar displays and what were the results and methods used?

I am getting this display (Philips 234E5QHSB) http://download.p4c.philips.com/files/2/234e5qhsb_93/234e5qhsb_93_pss_.pdf

I only experiance with running a monitor at a higher Hz than it was rated at resulted in it dieing on me in less than 3 months.

So enjoy your overclock of your monitor and good luck

Thank you for your input Arkadrel. Personally I'm not concerned with that. I'm only interested if it's better to run at 60hz or 68hz. I mean, are there ANY concerns about running my monitor on 65-68hz other than the degradation of the monitor?

An example of a strange disrepancy:

In the new Wolfenstein game, in menu, fps is locked at 60.

When I enabled Vsync - it went to 66 (which is the refresh rate I set)
So isn't this just abnormal that in some games it will hit roof at 60, but my refresh rate is 66, so it will cause tearing?

Titanfall did a similar thing, it would run at 144hz if you had vsync on and at 60hz with it off. All it means is that the game has implemented a cap into the frame rate, the assumption being that you want the frame rate capped with vsync off. This is not usually what gamers want, they want the maximum frame rate possible. Its just a bad design choice in every game its done in, presumably they do it due to a limitation in the engine, but its a choice in the engine based on targeting a console.

It may be an issue in games like Skyrim, Rage and Wolfenstein. These games set artificial FPS cap at 60 because their game engine doesn't work correctly beyond 60 FPS. Their physics engine is designed to work around 60hz and no higher.

I haven't played Rage or wolfenstein (the new one), but Skyrim behaves very wonky at higher than 60 FPS. You'll be on a bridge over water, and you behave as if you are in the water. You'll see chickens bouncing back and forth super fast and stuff randomly fly across the room.

If a game has a 60 FPS cap, you typically don't want to trick it into higher FPS.
