Hello everyone,

I got a new system about 1 month ago, and I always been using AMD cpu.
Since Intel got crazy on overclocking i decided to go wtih intel cpu and Msi mobo.

This is my system
LainLi case full tower.
850W power supply.
8800GTS video card.
MSI P6Dimon mobherboard
4GB of crucial PC 6400 ram timeing 4-4-4-12 - 2.2v
Intel E8400 3.0GHZ Water cooled idel temps 19C* at full load at 24C*
(4) Hard drives. 236gb Raptors at raid 0 and (2) 400 GB raid 0 for storage and gameing

I had this system for a while now, and i want to do some tweekeing,
I never overclocked before so im new to this,
Where do i start and what do i have to do. I read forms left and right, and each time i try to do something in bios, my system wont boot up right ..
Please help me out ...

Thank You ALL

Im running my e8400 at 3.6 by changing the FSB to 400mhz, and adjusting the voltage to 1.25v. You may or may not need to adjust other votages and settings to make it stable. You also have to make sure your ram runs in 1:1 mode otherwise when you up the fsb your ram will run through the roof.

Safest bet is to keep everything at default and just start upping the fsb in increments of 10. boot into windows and test the stability, running games, running folding, etc. If its stable boot back into the bios and increment it another 10fsb. Once it starts getting unstable up the voltage a little bit. This takes forever but its the safest bet.

The MoBo is: MSI P6N Diamond LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard
And the power supply is Silverstone 850W SLI
The cooling for the cpu is DangerDan water block runing 1/2" pipeing.

Thanks

Really the first place to start is with the cpu, see what it can do, with water you can do alot, so dont go crazy with voltage just see what it can do. throw it up to about 3.6 like Raider1284 said, but keep voltage on auto then check to see what the computer will set at, that is always overshooting what is really needed, then back off of that voltage and you have something that should be stable at 3.6...then if you feel like going higher just go by 100mhz, adjust vcore, stable; the repeat

Check to see what batch you got for an E8400 (written on box and cpu) it will start with Q8 or Q7 (only Q and first 3 digits are relevant), then check out what people are getting with similar batches, if you picked the right box you might be one of the people who can pull of 4.0 at a low voltage (some will say it is the luck of the draw, but getting a good batch increases those odds a whole lot) also dont forget to try different multi if it is not stable, alot of people will go with 8.5x470FSB or 8x500, just remember that although 9x is a option it may just not work for you, and if it does well then thats great

your probably going to have to back off those timings on the ram if you go high, if your pushing it past 400fsb keep it at 1:1 and throw it up to 5-5-5-15 until it is time to ram tweak.

When you feel you have gotten a stable CPU and good vcore (dont push it past 1.36v) then move onto the RAM...find memset 3.5 for a good tool to set all timings, then it is just a guess and test game until you find something that will work, you will mostlikly want to stay at 1:1 just because RAM is binned based on how it can perform and although it should be able to push past 1:1 you might just want to keep it kinda close to stock.

there is a version of memtest for inside of windows, search memtest zip i think then use that to test, only save settings that are stable, and when memtest shows about 50% completed without a error then try some other timings and make sure you write it down, the first 4 options will most likly not move but the subtimings will move, and make a big difference in latency, (for me 15ns or 25% decrease in latency) and if a error shows up, change back immediately

good luck
