Overclocking help please Thanks

I would like to overclock my cpu, i have a amd thunderbird 1.0ghz, Abit kt7a, 1 stick of crucial 256 ram cl2, and 1 stick of cheap 256 ram, Asus V7700 geforce 2 32mb GTS, What would be the best way to go about overclocking the cpu, i dont know that much about this stuff other than what i have read.

First, let me say welcome to Anandtech! There are two different ways to OC your workstation. You can overclock the RAM or you can unlock your processor and raise the multiplier.

Do you know what heatsink you have? OCing usually means you need a beefier heatsink to handle the dissipation of the additional heat.

When you do remove the heatsink, look carefully at the CPU slug for the "stepping" code. Some CPUs overclock better than others. I've seen 1Ghz CPUs that refuse to break 1.1Ghz no matter how much cooling is provided and some that easily do 1.4Ghz without even trying.

Ok I tried raising the fsb on the motherboard from 100 to 108-110 mhz and it will go all the way to the opening screen of windows xp and then it freezes. Does that mean that is as far as I can go?

Not necessarily. Bump the voltage, but watch those temps like a hawk!

Ok i raised the fsb to 108 and 110 and with vcore of 1.775 and when it got into windows it worked for a little and then it froze on both.

Some of your components might not like the change in bus speed, if you go into the bios on the KT7A, you can set the fsb to 133, which will set the multiplier for your agp and pci slots to normal.
