What the f!ck is with you people ripping the guy for his post!

Yes, I currently run an OC system, Celeron533A@800, and I bought that CPU specifically because it was very cheap and I wanted to OC.

I see the guy's point. Some people just want their stuff to work and be done with it. When you can buy a P3-733 for $150, who needs to overclock. He is right, you save $50, big deal. Yeah $50. is a lot of money to many people. But, if you are sweating over $50, maybe you shouldn't be spending money on computer sh!t then. So, OC if you want, don't if you don't want to, just remember, OCing is not what it was back when 300As were the thing to buy, or when you could push a P120 to 166. Now a days, 700 to 933, who cares, both speeds are plenty fast.

As for ripping on junior member status, wtf is wrong with you people (some of you anyway). You have to get started somewhere. Maybe the guy knows a lot about computers, and just doesn't hang on this forum too much. Every day I see senior and up members asking stupid questions, and sometimes see junior members with answers. Membership status in this place doesn't mean sh!t.

I think I missed my morning coffee, see you all later,

Well Al1, i'm sorry that your rich ass doesn't enjoy a $100 savings. But for us normal folk, we would rather save that money, rather than spend it.

Again, I think it needs to be stressed that while his stance was a bit antagonistic, he does indeed make some indirect points, although I think they have to do more with the extreme end of overclocking. I too have noticed and shaken my head at what some of the people onthis board spend their time doing - waterblocks made from radiators pulled from junkyards, and etc. There is definitely a line between passion and obsession that has been crossed by some of you.

Sure, overclocking is fun, but there are other hobbies that are just as fun and more productive than rotting the eyes over endless 3am tweak sessions. Jog a bit, get outside! It seems as if some of this ultra tweaking and massive money spending is only aimed at getting a benchmark screen from Sisoft.

All this kinda reminds me of my litle cousin, the hacker/tweaker. The kid is ALWAYS tweaking his computer. But guess what? He does it so much so, that he never really "uses" the damn thing. It's as if the tweaking has become an end in itself. He tweaks it till it inevitable crashes, and then spends hours getting it back to "perfect" - its teh constant fixing that he's addicted to, not the computer itself. That's pretty damn scary if you ask me - I wonder how many of you are doing the same exact thing!

I hope I haven't offended anyone, just making an observation.

Well lets see. When I bought my celeron 300a for $95 the price of the PII 450 was $450. Mine ran 450mhz. When I bought my duron 600 it was $80. The price of the thunderbird 1 ghz was around $300. I think it was a good idea for me. I dont know maybe my math is bad.

It is not as good of a deal now but still fun to do. Remember a lot of people in here bought and overclocked their cpu when the prices were like what it was for me.

Get a clue. If you are building a system you should already buy a good power supply like the sparkle 300 watt that came in my supermicro 750 case. I haven't ever bought anything I wouldn't have anyway if I wasn't O/C'ing. Instead of buying two P3 1000's i bought two P3 700's have have them running at 1050 each.

a 1ghz P3 is what, around $280 ? P3's only run you around 135.

guarantee on a cpu? big deal. never needed one.

for overclockers out there...how many of you willing to spend 130 usd(maybe more) for a water cooling kit? is it really that nescessary to get a 130 bucks water cooling to cool down your cpu?

See.. that's the whole point. I'd like to venture a guiess that most people here are a 650@900 (Duron) type of person. The rest are either very shy, or unbelievably obsessed - again these are the extremes. It's obviously my personal opinion, but I really have yet to meet anyone who can provide even a simple justification for a water-cooled system. That's just plain ridiculous - and dare I say, GEEKY. Perhaps I am not well versed enough but I don't see any significant gain from doing this sort of thing - it seems like an obsessive's option for a few more Mhz....

CichliSuite,

you are right in a way. What some people do (including me...) might be obsesive in a way. However, I do NOT consider myself a GEEK, nor would my family and friends. I just do what I feel is fun at this point of time, and right now it's fitting a watercooler in my system. Next month I might go up to California digging for gold, or just spend two relaxing weeks down in Mexico, somewhere.

Right now, this is my hobby. What's yours? And don't tell me you don't get "obssesive" about it at times!

Ever watch Home Improvement?

It is always WAY COOLER to do a project around the house with industrial power tools. Could you get the job done with some duct tape and a butter knife? Maybe, but you missed out on a spending spree at the Home Depot.

Anyone who knows what I am talking about can respect someone who water cools their CPU. Do they need to? Who cares, they can!!!

1. al1 misses the point of this -- it's a guy thing (and now more than ever, a girl thing too) to increase the performance of what you ALREADY have.

2. overclocking does attempt save money, that's true. Running a 600e as an 800EB for $75 less is a real benefit. It's not the money itself that matters, but it allows an individual who simply cannot afford an 800EB to get the benefits of an 800EB in exchange for his or her time, effort, planning, and reseach. This is the basis of our economy--creating additional value with our time and minds.

3. one area that IS a wasted attempt to save money: pre-tested cpu's. I thought this was a great idea when I first heard about it, but when I saw the bonus sellers expected I was shocked. Often a 700e OEM guaranteed to overclock to 933 costs less than $50 less than a genuine RETAIL 933EB, but without a warranty. (And a 933EB is an easy overclock to over 1Ghz).

Just my thoughts.

I'm not one for the extreme end of the spectrum, at least as far as alternative cooling methods go, but I've got a dual p3-700@933 system(decent HSF but all else standard) and a dual p3-500@560 & dual p2-266@300 and both of these latter two system are stock retail everything - no additional costs whatsoever!

BTW, I enjoy the "Home Improvement" show for the same reasons as mentioned by others.

When I found out my Dell P11-300 wasnt upgradable. I hit the bricks.... Why do I want to buy another OEM product that goes obsolete ?

A few weeks reading in this forum helped me build a 980 mhz machine when the 900mhz chip was $500+. The 700mhz PIII was only $165 in October last year. (probably even cheaper now)

Granted I had to buy a case and MB too. But I can upgrade now! And I kept my original hard disk.

That was the KICKER. Who wants to reinstall 3 years of software? Or can you even get the original installs?

The guy never did respond...but I'll bet he looked at a few responses.

I overclock as a hobby..always have. Started in the early 90's uprading & tweaking Win 3.1 (what a joke!!). When Win 95 took away most of the tweaking potential I started replacing video cards, adding ram..that kinda stuff.

I the late 90's starting building. My first was the excitement of my dull life (not that bad, really!!), with all the reseach on components....especiallythe mobo for a K6-2. Weeks of prep, ordering on line waiting for shipments - took an hour to assemble & I was hooked.

My current system is a 1.2 Gig Tbird @ 1.4 on a KK266. FSB is running 163 with Kingmax PC150 memory. I just ordered some VC memory & hoping that will be a cheap remedy to the 163 limit of the Kingmax & cas3....but it's fun & rather addictive - but beats the hell outa what ever Al1 is on.
