Overclocking issues: please help!

Hi,
I followed the overclockers guide and came up with the following:
I can get a max htt of at least 285. I failed prime95 at 2700 mhz, and it seemed to be going fine at 2600mhz. Memtest86 failed at 225, but passed twice at 220.
HERE IS THE KICKER: I have the settings at 285 x 9 (2565mhz) with 3x multiplier. For some reason, if I have the memory over 100mhz, the computer does not post. At 100mhz, it seems fine. This is with timings 3-3-3-8 and 3-4-4-11 (1T).
I am running:
MSI Neo4 K8N SLI mobo (3.7 Bois)
AMD64 3200+ Venice (E6) (running max voltage which is approx 1.595
X90 with panaflo fan
Corsair value ram 1gb DDR400 (running at 2.8v)
What's going on??? Please let me know if you need any additional info.

try running your ram at 2T, just to see if it will boot. i know the amd64 does not like 2T but just to see if it will boot

When running the cpu at its max the mem controller sometimes suffers. You might not be able to get your highest mem overclock when maxing out the cpu. Some boards just dont like some mem dividers, and passing memtest doesnt always mean it'll run windows.
Value sticks arent the best oc'ers and going for the highest mem oc doesnt always mean best alround performance if the timings suffer to much.

Get some realworld benchmarks and see what settings that give you best performance.

Why arent you using your 10 multi? Try 10x256 and a mem divider that brings your mem speed close to 200. Find out what multi's and dividers work together up to what speed.

Thanks for the input Vanden. The reason I am at 9x multiplier is because I am not good at overclocking (I am quite the n00b). I guess I was figuring it was better to have a higher HTT as I was running a 3x multiplier. I figured 285 x3 was a better than 256 x3. Does it not make a difference?
Any thoughts on what to try is more than welcome. Again, I am definitely a novice at overclocking. I just want to get 2500-2600 mhz out of this 3200+.

To add, I just set the bios to:
256 x 10 (2560 ghz) @1.595v, 3x htt, 3-3-3-8 166mhz @ 2.8v. Posts and seems to work fine. Should I try setting it to 4x htt for the higher fsb or is this a good overclock?

TO ADD: Just ran 3DMark05 and got a 5087. Got a 5096 with the old settings and the RAM at 100mhz... Any ideas / reactions / thoughts?

Get cpu-z to see your real memspeeds, if you dont have it already. Dont trust the bootscreen.

The htt multi does very little for performance, just keep it below 1000.

1.595 V is quite alot for this speed. My winchester does 2563 at 1.5 V. Dont use more V than what you need for stability, else your just creating extra heat.

First lower Vcore, still maintaining stabilty at your current speed. Start raising the fsb and bump the V when needed. At some point raising the voltage wont help anymore.

1.6V is way too high, bring it down to 1.5 at least.

OK, I will drop the vcore down. I have it up per someone else's recommendation. They said that it was fine at that voltage, especially with the x90 and panaflo cooling. I will turn it down though.

Turned it down. Changed HTT to 255 x 10 (2550mhz), 3x multiplier, 1.5v. Seem better? Is the memory fine at 2.8v? Should I attempt any additional changes for a better overclock than this, or is it not worth the extra 100-200 mhz?
Any other info or opinions are greatly appreciated.

Nah, 1.6V is fine if he's got an XP-90 with a decent fan and temps are respectable.

I run mine at 1.6V (actual) all the time and it idles at 28C, full load at 43C.


However, definitely start with a lower Vcore when testing stability and then increase it for stability. Then it's a matter of comfort.

I can do 2.52GHz on my 3000+ @ 1.55V, 2.60 Ghz @ 1.60V and 2.7 Ghz takes about 1.65-1.675V (way more voltage than I'm comfortable with).


The X2's seem to use less voltage. For a single core, anything up to 1.60V should be fine. Some people are using 1.60V on stock cooling (I tried it and my load temps were ~55!).

UPDATE: At 255x10 at 1.55v and 3x multiplier, the computer would lock up when pushed (aka fear demo or 3dmark05).
So now I am back to the beginning a little. What should I be trying?

250*10 seems to be working. Do you think it might be topped out with basic overclocking?

i think you might of topped out with what you have... i think the value ram is holding you back but come on, you are running 500 MHz faster then your chip is rated not to bad I can boot @ 2650 MHz on my 3000+ but not stable, i can run stable @ 2610 MHz but my vcore is high, but i run very stable @ 2430 9x 270 which i am happy with for now, maybe later when i need more speed i will push my system faster but everyday use i am happy.

Yeah, not disappointed by the OC, but I want to make sure that if anyone thinks I can do better pretty easily, please chime in and have me try it.
