Bought this used Mobile 2600 with IQYHA stepping. The first owner said he could get 11x240 on air
@1.75v core. And that was with Mushkin Black Lvl 2 and a DFI infiniti

so far, I have not been able to get over 206fsb stable. And Im running water and have my vcore at 1.775.
I tried dropping my memory settings to 3-3-3-10 and voltage to 2.8. I also underclocked it with a 5/4 ratio. Didnt help.

This is on an Abit Nf7-s v2 with Mushkin Black Lvl 2.

Is this a board problem? Or am I just doing something wrong? Does running memory in dual-channel mode make any difference?

thx

What PSU are you using, and which PSU did the guy you bought the setup from use? Sometimes a average (or less) quality PSU can limit your overclock.

2.6 at 1.75 vcore is 95% likely to be a lie man, I have a good stepping and to hit 2640 like he says it takes 1.875vcore. I think he ripped you off

Naa it's still possible as I've had my 2500Mobile @ 2.5GHz under 1.75v's .The problem has to do with the Mobo not hitting above 206 FSB and Dual channel shouldn't make much of a difference but try using one stick. I replaced mine with a DFI which is a better OCer cause the Abit only did 210 while the DFI hits over 260. Try asking
Over here...Also the latest Bios is 2.7 was just released

Have you tried upping the multi on the mobile to see how high (in mHz) it would go? Or lowering the multi when going for high FSB speeds.

What proggies are you using to rest for stability? Memtest86 and P95 maybe? What testing procedure are you using (for example, first test with memtest and then go to Prime95)

HERE'S a link to some suggested BIOS settings for OCing.

I have tried pulling up the multiplier and leaving the FSB at 200. I can get to 2.5 stable then.

And I always test with either 3DMark 2001 or Prime 95

Well, if the cpu can do 2500mhz it seems unlikely to me it is causing the FSB 206 ceiling.

I'd jump to 210 and run Memtest86 to check the ram.

The NF7-S regularly seems to reach 215-220 or so without mods or modded BIOS. I'm still usuing the original BIOS, D19, that came with the mobo.

Might put MBM5 to check the voltage to the DIMM and Chipset. maybe it's under-volting and causing the probs?

Uhh wait, I have done one thing to my otherwise stock mobo. I removed the NB cooler and applied Arctic Silver 5. The factory application of thermal compound leaves much to be desired. How hot is NB heatsink when OCing? Is the fan still running? No joke, they seem to crap-out often.

I've also done many adj to my BIOS. Check the link above for suggested BIOS settings.

What are your ram timings, voltages and BIOS settings now?

i have the exact same setup, it has nothing to do with the processor, the nf7-s simply cannot do that high of a FSB. and i also have the IQYHA stepping processor and it hits 2.6 ghz at 1.80 or so. but i tried and tried to get the FSB higher but nothing ever helped, its simply the motherboard.

Try some modded BIOS. Many use those to great effect for reaching a high FSB.

Im running water on my NB.

RAM timing is 3-3-3-10 at 2.8v

Is it possible that the system Abit uses to simulate an unlocked multiplier on locked chips could be causing some kind of lock? They call it MaxFID I think.

Also, anyone have an idea on a decent modded BIOS? Oh and vesion 2.6 is the latest official BIOS for the 2.0 board

its not worth buying a new board for. For that money, Id just upgrade my platform for a little more.

a7n8x-e dx won't do it either, that board is a steaming pile of sh*t by the way.

if you want FSB, you either need to modify that NF7 or buy a DFI Infinity/Lanpart.

Mod? how so?

hehehe

here's the deal.

for pure fsb overclocking, the dfi infinity/lanparty is best. The board can hit 250 mhz easy.

for pure clockspeed, the nf7-s is actually a better board. where a chip would top out at 2.5 ghz on a dfi board, would top out at some value higher.

as for mods... there are a couple of options.

the first is to find a modded bios by people such as tictac or hellfire who have built in L12 mods built into the bios...

what the L12 mod does is basically trick your northbridge into thinking that your chip is a default 166 or 200 mhz fsb chip rather than a 133 mhz chip which all mobiles are...

what this does is "loosen" the timings on the northbridge and will allow for higher fsb's...

the hardcore way of doing it is by doing 3 physical mods to your board, vdd, vtt, and vdimm.

the max on the nf7-s is 1.7 if i remember correctly... as this is not enough to hit high fsb's with this board... you will need around 1.8 to 1.9.

vtt is required because when you increase your vdimm voltage, the vtt has to 1/2 the vdimm value. when you increase the vdimm voltage on this board beyond the 2.9 allowed in the bios, the vtt stops tracking properly. so a physical mod is required to set the vtt at that magical 1/2 value.

vdimm is basically so you can get more voltage to your ram.

i guess with the new samsung tccd which allow for 250 mhz easy with 2.85 volts or less, the vdimm and vtt mods may not be required at all.

just my 2 cents!

Is the memory Mushkin Black Level II (BH5)? For whatever reason, I've never had any luck with BH5 and nforce2 at Cas 3. Try 2.5-3-3-10 and up the memory voltage.

Read here
Read here

That may not be the problem, but it should eliminate the memory as the problem.

Hey tyson83,

Oldman420 PM'd me and said he had the FSB up to 240 on his NF7-S v2. He was using Merlin's Taipan BIOS. IIRC, there's a link to 'em on the last page of the Official NF7 Thread in the mobo section.

Fern

EDIT : HERE'S a thread about modded over at nForcersHQ.

Also, yeah seems I've heard about prob trying to run Cas 3.0 on the NF7-S. I thought Mushkin was good stuff? Why you need Cas. 3.0. I'm at 215FSB and my Corsair is at 2.0-2-3-11

well so far modded BIOS's arent helping. Ive tried 2. One wouldn't even let me get into Windows. The other didnt improve my o'cing ability.

Ill try some more.

I'm also interested in the Black Mantaray BIOS, but should i use the Command per CLock enabled or disabled version?
