Overclocking my E6300

I'm using the EasyTuner 5 which came with the Gigabyte DS3 motherboard software to overclock my E6300. However, each time I restart the computer it goes back to its normal speeds. Is this normal? Do I have to manually set the speeds each time I restart my computer? Also, for those who have tried it so far, what's the safest limit to pushing my FSB speed? Thanks a lot!

use BIOS, AFAIK for any system, don't know specifically for C2D.

Yes, all software overclocking reverts to stock speeds each time you restart. That way, if you accidentally go too high, you don't have to reset the BIOS.

I used EasyTune to test the system and then the BIOS settings to make it permanent. It's quite handy for that, but not much more as far as tuning goes. Adjust, test, adjust, test, etc...all without rebooting - until you get to the breaking point.

The uGuru software that comes with the Abit AB9 updates the Bios when you software overclock, so when you restart you have the updated speeds, voltages, etc. from the uGuru. I don't know that other software does this, but the Abit software definitely does update the Bios. Interestingly, it doesn't update until after it does some internal stability testing, so when you crash out (i.e. for me, attempting 400 MHz FSB on stock voltages) it does not update.
