Hey guys I just finished putting my i7(920) parts together, and started overclocking it a little bit,but I have a question regarding the temperature,I was able to achieve 3.8Ghz at core voltage 1.2800V according to CPU-Z,and cpu idle temperature is around 51c according to the Asus AI Suite which comes wth the asus p6t mobo,im using stock cooler,is this temperature okay? And is Asus AI Suite reliable on those temperature?the voltage and clock speed seem to match regardless,so give me some comments on that please, and how do you take a screen shot of CPU-Z for Windows Vista Ultimate? Thanks alot!

i7's run hot, especially with a stock cooler. Push the print screen key and open paint. press control-V to paste the screenshot in paint and save as a .jpeg.

You are not going to be able to get the i7 920 to 3.8GHz on the stock cooler, these things get too hot.

51C at idle means load temps are going to be off the charts. Once you go to stress test that CPU you will likely be seeing 80C+ temps; that is not good.

So I recommend you either get a better cooler or try a more reasonable OC. Something like 3.2-3.4GHz will likely work on the stock cooler with lower voltage. Try something along those lines and then run Prime95 and monitor temps; try to keep them below ~70-75C if possible. I would run Prime95 for a good 8 hours or so before declaring that the system is stable. Alternatively there is Linpack 64-bit, which is the ultimate stress test.... but running that on an overclocked, stock cooled i7 is probably not the best of ideas.

The idle temperature was around 47C at 3.6Ghz,and 51C at 3.8Ghz,I did a prime95 stress test the temp went from 50s to 96C in like 15 seconds,so I stopped the test few seconds after it reaching that point,I now set the speed back at 3.4Ghz which idles around 41C,is this temp fine now?Btw would my CPU be damaged when I do stress test like prime95 and reach high temp like 90s like I did?(A bit scared on this)
Btw I'm using Asus P6T Deluxe, and at the very beginning of boot up,there's always something weird show up that says something like "Marvell 63x/64xx adapter....no physical Disk.....no Virtual Disk, then another page or two says "Bios Version 1.173....no hard disk",they show up everytime I boot my system and before entering Windows, thing is my harddrive has been set at Sata 1 correctly and running well,so does anyone know how to fix this problem?

These Core i7 CPUs seem to be designed to sustain high temperatures and still be alright; 90C for a few seconds likely will be fine, but obviously it is not good for a stable build.

Try running Prime95 @ 3.4GHz and see what happens. I would say keep temps under 75C, others might go up to 80C but I wouldn't push it that far.

Can't help you with the other problem.... I have the same mobo and CPU, unfortunately I can't get it work at all right now.

Thanks Extelleron, yea I think 3.4Ghz on stock cooler is pretty sweet, the idle temp now never goes beyond 44C so I think it's fine.
Still trying to figure out the "No hard Disk" problem, well it doesnt affect anything in windows, just have to watch those two or three pages pop up everytime before entering windows so it's kinda distracting just.
