Overclocking on A8N5X problems

I just pieced my new system together and am happy it worked first boot up and I didn't even have to swap the hdd or power LED's

I was following the guide compiled by Zebo and have been having issues.

Whatever my successful overclocks were (not very good ones), they seemed to get reset to default whenever I enter WinXP. I checked with CPU-Z to verify it.

However once I am in WinXP, I can use clockgen program to overclock and my overclocks go much higher. I have only checked 2500 with long term Prime95 (well that Prime95 like proggie that automatically assigns two threads) and have stability tested it for 24hrs just fine.

I am just barely over stock voltage at 1.375 (only because I turned it up trying to get bios overclocks stable).

Any idea's why I can't overclock successfully from bios?

I've never had that problem with mine, but I have a single-core cpu, and probably have a much earlier BIOS than you. My BIOS version is 502.

I've used 9, 10, 11 and 12 multipliers, many different HTT, memclock and latency settings, and it has held every time. If you don't get any answers here, you might find something in the Asus forum at amdmb.com forums.

Yeah it's the wierdest thing, its like the OS is reseting the pll for the HTT (fsb, whatever), I might try flashing a different BIOS in there. I just hate flashing for no reason though. (Paranoid maybe) I do it when I have to, but usually freak a bit until its done and safely boots up.

I think the clockgen proggie is working and it seems stable at 2.5Ghz (1.375 vcore) with more than 24hrs of stability testing (Prime95 x 2), and 5-6 hours of looped 3DMark2001.

I think I am happy with this processor though.

I wouldn't worry about it. ClockGen is an awesome program. Once you find out whether it's stable, you can have it run every time you boot, and reset everything to where it's at now. Besides, it's quite normal to get higher overclocks with ClockGen, than without it.

I agree, it's too risky to do unless you have a backup chip, or are willing to wait for a new one. If there was ever a perfect reason to have an UPS, that's it. Until about a year ago, the electricity in my neighborhood would never falter unless we had a storm or an accident. I would update a BIOS without much concern. Now, we get more frequent interruptions, probably from local construction.

I agree with the other guy that clockgen works great. I used it with an MSI Neo3 a few months ago. I've never heard of it causing a problem.
