Hey there,

I've just read that a user, Nats, have been overclocking on his ECS K7S5A motherboard. I, however, cannot overclock anything anywhere on my K7S5A. I have the latest BIOS (I think - couldn't check as my ISP seems to have problems). Could someone enlighten me on this subject please? How do I, if possible, overclock using my K7S5A?

Regards,
Nimbus

You need to download the overclocking BIOS for the ECS K7S5A, which I believe only allow FSB adjustments.

Where do I get this overclocking BIOS?
Btw. is ECS.com.tw down? I can't open the site.

I have a via k7vmm, it i belive may be similar to that other board. My mainboard has a fsb setting of 100 or 133, i have no fsb settings in bios, so do you think there would be a bios update that would allow me to overclock my fsb? If so please respond.

OK I have looked at some picks and my mother board is the exact same as the ECS k7S5A, except it has only 2 pci ports and is called the ecs k7vmm. Would the same bios for the k7s5a work on my main board, if not please show me where i could donwload a bios update for this mainboard that im using now. please healp thx.

I don't think its the same dguy6789...the ECS K7S5A uses the SiS735 chipset, not a VIA chipset. Since the chipsets are different, the BIOS will definitely be different.

well, find out what chipset its based on, what motherboard its similar to, then maybe you can use a SoftFSB version that's compatibile with your motherboard or a similar motherboard based on the same chipset.

Yikes...looks like the development and support of SoftFSB has been stopped. You can't even download it from H.Oda's page now. The latest version was at least 2.0 I think, but I did a google search and the newest I could come up with was version 1.7. I don't know if your motherboard is supported but you can give it at try here. You might have to download the SoftFSB plugins if your clock generator isn't supported in version 1.7. Use at your own risk though.

CheapoBios, CheapoBios, CheapoBios

You can get it at the OCWorkbench.com site.

Got my T-Bred 1700+ to 1.7 Ghz @ default Volts (147 fsb), that's coupled with Crucial pc133 SDram (256x2)

Great upgrade imo.

Will not work for the K7VMM no, but it will for me

I think it was directed to me as he quoted me. But then again... maybe I shouldn't OC but buy a whole new CPU instead..... I'm running a TBird 800..... yup - good old trusty model 6.....

Talking abut upgrading: HOW much better IS the TBred compared to the Palomino????? I've just read an article at tomshardware.com that gave me the impression: TBred sucks.....
Please don't get me wrong... I'm asking if this is true, not claiming. I might have got an old acticle (maybe it was model A Tbred and the model B is better???).

Which bios should I download: chb1129.zip or chb1129f.zip? What options do these bioses have? vdimm, vcore, memory options, clock multiplier, fsb?
Thanks in advance.

Hey NimBus!!! What I OC'd was an Athlon XP 1700+/1463 Mhz to 1573.
Using the bios from OCWorkbench, I was able to increase the FSB and
mem speed from 133 to 143. Not much to write about but at least a
modest OC.

Hmm your T-Bird 800 is probably an A model the one that runs at 100 FSB.
I had a T-Bird 750 and was able to OC using the pencil trick to connect
the L1 bridges. W/ an A7V board I was only able to OC to 800 Mhz by changing
the multiplier to 8. Increasing the FSB even only to 105 Mhz was disastrous.

If you do use the cheepo bios you can only change the FSB, although
I've read of people having more luck pushing their T-birds. I'd recommend
a CPU upgrade and if you still want to OC, please, please, please, get
a decent power supply.

The chb1129f.zip bios is the version that enables Fast Writes.
Fast Writes along w/ Side Band Addressing are features of the AGP
bus to improve data transfer. If you want these features enabled
it must be both supported by your video card and mother board.
Most video cards have these features disabled--the improvements
are marginal and not worth instability it adds to the system.

Fast Writes used to be supported in previous bios from ECS
but has since been dropped. My Innovision Geforce3 Ti200 had
Fast Writes and SBA disabled and to enable it I could either flash
the bios of the video card or use software--I used Rivatuner to
stay on the safe side. There was no noticeable improvement on
3DMark scores and sometimes the benchmark would not even
complete.

I suggest if you use chb1129 and forget about fast writes, the
improvements are not noticeable and not worth the penalty of
an unstable system. BTW only fsb/mem speed changes are
possible w/ this bios.

Oh darn

I just flashed the F bios... I don't have any problems though. Got my Athlon Tbird 800 up running 900 (8x112) Couldn't get it to 1G though....

And btw. the BIOS allows only fsb adjustment. But that's all right for me. Increasing the Voltage of the CPU you could just as well go sign a death warrant.

Your lucky. Wish my old t-bird was that easy to OC.
It wouldn't even reach 105 FSB. *sigh*

MUHAHAHAHHA MY TBIRD 900 WILL EAT U ALL!!!!!

Lucky... perhaps - I dunno really, this is THE cpu I have.... It's not my second computer or so. You have a 1700+@1573 which is just a tiny wee bit better than my 800@900....

Regards,
Nimbus

Btw... I made up my mind and withdrew all the money on my account.... Palo. 2000+ it is.... I won't go for lower clock speed as I don't want to depend on OC'ing. I will probably try and OC it a little but if it doesn't work that's ok with me.
