Does anyone know what the highest i can go safely on core clock before having to tweak with voltages on the sapphire r9 290 tri-x edition. thanks

I would say 1130/1500 Mhz at say +1.34v and then your GPU will hit MAX Temp of 92C and Termal Throttle with an Air Cooled Hawaii GPU - The other solution is to buy an OEM Hawaii Card and Water Cool with EK or XSPC Water Blocks to go beyond 1130Mhz's without thermal throttling say under 85C @ 1200Mhz + 1500Mhz Frequencies (Stable at 1180) - Pending the Cards Ram, where Alpida vRam is stuck at 1500Mhz and Samsung vRam is capable doing 1600Mhz+ on water and keeps the card from throttling with temps max'd at 70C with as much as +1.80Mv or even +2.00Mv for Benching.

The Stock OEM PCB AMD Hawaii, under water, is a BEAST of a card (290 or 290X - Yes the 290X will go higher) for the money compared to nVidia offerings as long as you put Hawaii OEM Cards under water. Eats PSU Wattage though.

Can't much much for any Air Cooled None OEM PCB AMD Hawaii GPU Card including your Tri-X.

Sorry for the Gibberish.

To answer your question, it depends on the luck of the draw, but 1075MHz is probably all you can really expect assuming your card is average. Some people have hit a bit over 1100MHz, but much beyond that always requires voltage.

Mine tops out around 1150 MHz core / 1600 MHz memory (only tested with max voltage)
My everyday oc is in my sig. Running with such a high overclock creates a lot of extra heat which isn't worth it for me.

I ran 1150Mhz core 1250Mhz mem. +100mV on afterburner. Temps never go past 87C on 34C ambient temp.

Without vcore mod, I'd say 1.1ghz is a good target. Both of mine did that.

I find with Hawaii, its better to downclock & undervolt them, they become incredibly efficient (like Maxwell). You can drop about 50W in power usage and only lose ~10% performance.

You can actually drop even more power consumption by dropping the memory clock and undervolt.

Those memory & memory controllers uses a hell lot of power.

You can try this: 1000Mhz core & 1000Mhz memory @ -65mV
if you prefer 947Mhz core then can drop it to -75mV.
if we use 1250Mhz memory the max undervolt I can get is only -25mV.

by using -65mV the power consumption is crazy low, not that much performance loss too.

Using stock voltage I can do 1125MHz but can't do 1150Mhz haven't done any more granular testing to find the exact point it fails. Memory wise I can run 1450MHz at stock voltage but it scales with "core" voltage which is odd maybe I'm memory controller limited. Can do around 1650MHz with +118mV

I need +118mV to be artifact free @1200MHz (only tested Valley/Firestrike). I normally run 1150/1500MHz@ +37mV which is solid.

I get 1100 on +31mv, 1050 on stock volts on mine. Mine's got crap RAM that fails if I touch it at all.

I run 2x Sapphire Tri-X 290Xs at 1100/1625 (6.5ghz), stable and works great. Using the TRIXX app, I use VDDC Offset of 100 and power limit of 15. Don't remember what that translates to in terms of vCore, but from what I saw on the HardOCP overclocking article, it seemed 'mild'. Their 'Sane Voltage' setting was 150 VDDC Offset and Power Limit of 50. No issues with throttling and is completely stable.

It has been a while since I did it, so I don't remember how much more headroom there was if I continued to raise it, but I was happy with those numbers and left it alone.

Anyway, this is an interesting thread regarding underclocking it. I might just do that since I get way more FPS than I need right now with my setup. I just peg the VSYNC limit all of the time. I don't think it'll hurt me to drop some voltage and clocks and see how it runs.

Anything at / over 1100 core is a nice oc and plenty fast! Mine requires some juice to be stable at 1200 core also.

I got to ~1180 on mine (I ran xfire Tri-X 290X) before things started to fly apart, metaphorically speaking. But man, they sure did get hot, so make sure you have good airflow.

Best I got was 1200/1600 on air (early batch Tri-X 290). But I'm inclined to believe that was an above average overclock as 1100/1500 seems to be more common.
