Heard there are just Radeon DDR's thats downclocked? Do all of them do Radeon DDR speeds with/without extra cooling?

LE is better for gaming. VE has dual monitor support and DVI, but is more crippled than even the LE. I forget the particulars, but I own both.

I use the VE for my LCD, but wish I could stick the LE back in for the odd game.

The cards not for me as I have a Radeon 8500 . My bro is on a low budget and wants to play a few games but not at high resolutions(800x600 max). How would the Radeon VE compare to the GF2 MX or MX200 in games? Or would they be able even?

If you have the choice, GET THE LE!!! The difference in speed is night and day! No exaggeration.
The VE and MX200 are both pretty sad performers. The VE SDR only performed 10% faster than the Rage128 card I had before it.
Sad.

I now have a full-fledged Radeon DDR (like the LE) which stomps the VE so bad... well... I'm happy about having the real thing.

They both have a 128 bit processing pipeline, but the VE splits that in half for dual monitor support, whereas the LE uses the full 128 bit pipeline. Thus, the performance hit to the VE. The VE is acceptable for 2D multi-monitor duties only, IMO. The 32MB DDR Radeon LE is not too shabby for the money, and is a pretty decent last generation budget 3d gaming card. I believe that if properly optimized, it is better than a GF2 MX 400 card, and maybe even better than a GF2 GTS (if OC'd and HyperZ'd). Make sure to enable the HyperZ in the registry (not enabled by default for the LE versions when you install the drivers). Also, you can easily OC it to 166MHz (which is what the memory is rated at, but is shipped at around 138MHz), and as high as 190MHz (although I wouldn't recommend going higher than about 187MHz, which is what the retail Radeon DDR cards shipped at), depending on your card, for even better performance (you can use tools like Radeon Tweaker or Powerstrip to overclock the core / mem speeds). I still have one of these cards in my secondary rig, and it looks pretty good with the newer ATI catalyst drivers on every game I've played up to this point (although it's no match for my AIW Radeon 8500DV on my main rig).

Definately the LE for gaming. The VE lacks any Hardware T&L unit, has only a 128-bit SDR or a 64-bit DDR memory bus (so bandwidth will be around at best, 2.7GBs). The MX Series will thrash it because of the lack of Hardware T&L

Yeah, definitely get the Radeon LE once you enable HyperZ and up the clock frequency, its exactly the same as the original Radeon 32MB DDR. I have one in my rig, and its nice. If he doesn't go over 800x600 (and has a relatively decent box, like 800MHz or faster) he should definitely get pretty decent performance in most games.

you can get a Radeon 7500 for under $60....how cheap can the Radeon LE or VE be? i doubt it would be cheap enough to justify its crappiness

Its $30 cheaper. Anyway maybe I will stay away from it after all. BTW I have a Radeon 8500 how do I know if hyperz is enabled? How do I enable it or is it on by default? I am new to ATI so if theres any good tweaks please LMK.

I dropped a Radeon LE in my system a year ago when it was "the" budget card to get. If your bro has XP, the LE shows up as retail 7200 DDR, so you don't need to enable Hyper-Z or anything - it's done for you! I OCed it to 180/180 no problem with Rage3d Tweak and stock cooling. GTA3 is actually very playable as long as you don't get crazy with resolution/settings and Ghost Recon is sweet even at higher resolutions. 2d is ATi-smooth.

Is it true they are just underclocked Radeon DDR's? If so I will bump the one my sister has to 180/180 or what ever the Radeon DDR speeds are.

May put a fan on there for cooling.

You can actually flash the firmware of a Radeon LE to that of a Radeon 32MB DDR so you won't have to using another program to overclock it.
