Overclocking the 2900pro

I posted earlier about a problem with my new 2900pro. I wasn't sure if using just 2 6-pin power connectors would work with the 2900pro instead of using the 8-pin also. Anyway, it works now. But now I'm just wondering about overclocking. I've read that you can't use Overdrive if you're not using the 8-pin connector. I noticed that after I installed the drivers. Also, I tried installilng the latest version and the latest stable version of ATITool. Neither of them really recognized the card. It showed up as having like 125MHz core and 125MHz mem.
So what other alternative overclocking methods are there? Thanks for the help.

Ok. I just DLed rivatuner. Is there anything that is like 10x less confusing that I could use instead? Or is there a website you could link me to that has some instruction for simple overclocking using rivatuner? Thanks.

AMD GPU TOOL ATi Tool doesn't really work with vista and a 2900 (especially 1GB) since the last few updates that force a digitally signed driver among other things, AMD GPU TOOL is a simple program that will have to do until ATI Tool is updated to support everything for the 2900 (fan control, voltage adjustments, memory latency adjustment etc).

I'm sorry for what I'm going to say.

Did you build your computer if Rivatuner is "too confusing"?

Rivatuner overclocks fine if someone is just willing to maybe read a bit about how to use it before labeling it "too confusing". Plus the AMD GPU overclock tool does not save settings when you restart. Rivatuner will

I wouldn't recommend Rivatuner anyway- it changes memory latency to achieve a higher frequency which can yield much lower performance.

Contrary to what I have heard people speculate in the past It appears Riva doesn't change video card mem latency and that I had it confused with another app (OC Tools?). I can speak for 2900XT's when I say that running over certain frequencies does indeed change the memory latency regardless of the app as I can run my 1GB XT @ 2.3-2.4GHZ memory and get worse 3dmark scores with the same core than that of a significantly lower frequency (stock 2ghz and 2.2ghz give better scores). Therefore there must be certain thresholds within the Bios that determines when to change latency.

Chyeah. Definitely not. I just tried it again. I started it up and it recognized it as a R600 part, and even had most of the stats right (mem size, stream process., etc) but it said it's default clocks were 0mhz and 0mhz. So I go to run the "find max core" and it tells me my memory is overclocked (not). And my only option is to hit "ok". So I hit ok, and it runs for like 5 seconds, starts messing up my screen, then the comp restarts. Anyway...

Yes, I built my own computer. I've built many computers. And rivatuner is confusing if you didn't know how to get to the overclocking section, since that's not really it's main function. But yeah, I'll try rivatuner. I just liked how ati tool would let you find max mem and find max core so that I would know how much it could handle. Is there any feature like that in rivatuner?

Riva tuner has gotten better, but it's still more confusing than it needs to be...I haven't tried it in a while though.

I`m not terribly knowledgeable about computer hardware, but I can build a decent system with a little trial and error. Having said that, I really think Rivatuner is a rather intuitive, powerful piece of software that I think you`d come to enjoy using if you took a little time to learn it.

Just my $.02.

For the people that uses Rivatuner with vista, does Vista block rivatuner form starting up? The reason why I ask this is because everytime I start up my computer I get a msg that "A program has been blocked." Anyone dealing with the same problem? If so, what did you do to fix it?

The 2900 pro & XT have over 100Gb/s memory bandwidth, so there's very little to be gained from OCing the memory.

Getting the pro's core speed to above XT speeds (750+MHz) is easy enough with RivaTuner, but personally I'm only benching a small improvement - probably because I held back in some benchmarks by my Opt170 @3GHz.

unblock it

click on the "blocked programs" icon ... you get a list

i don't remember with RT, but many times you need to run a program as administrator ... also look for the very [non-beta] latest version of RT ... older versions sometimes have issues with Vista

i'd agree ... if i don't OC my e4300 to at least 2.8 or so, i start to bottleneck my 2900xt

Wow, I've been so late on my replies lately. Thanks for the response, I've tried it but still no go, I'll do some research on it.
