This is not a question of how high you can get your processor. How much time does it tkae you guys after everything is running to finish the oc process?

Thats really up to the user....

You can run some stress test to see how the OC handles under a strain. Prime95 is a good stress test. How long to run it? up to you...

I suggest just run it overnight while you sleep. You get up and nothing failed, you got a good OC!

yeah it depends on the user. You can OC to the max right away(not smart) and not test your OC with prime95 and be happy.

Or you can do it the right way and OC a little and test with prime95.

For example, say you have a 533 FSB P4 2.4GHz. I would OC it to about 2.6 and test. If that goes well bump it up to 2.75 and test. Then 2.85.....you get the idea. So, if you test for 8hrs each time and stop with 2.85 then it should take about 24 hrs. But, there is no real standard for how long it should take or how much you OC in each step. Some people say 300MHz per step others use 200MHz or 100MHZ and then there are people who will go up500MHz in each step or more. But I think as long as you test your OC with prime95 or some other CPU intensive app and get no errors you should be ok.

I started playing around with overclocking a few years back and I have not stopped. I take a few days off here and there, but I am ALWAYS tweaking and playing with the BIOS that I don't think I ever am finished! LOL

then i go from there keeping in mind max

usually first i go for highest fsb with low mult
then play around with mult....

im really all over the place lol, no organization whatsoever haha

And posting to a message board at 3 in the morning is cool

A couple minutes to overclock a bit, and then I run Prime95 when I go to work, memtest86 before bed. If it passes, I bump it up a bit more and do the same thing the next day

took me about 2 days to actually find the wall for my cpu, just set a multiplier and raise ur fsb till it wont take prime95 anymore, then drop your multiplier and raise ur fsb some more until it wont take prime95. Rinse and repeat until you finally hit the max fsb/multiplier combo u can hit and get 8+ hrs of prime out of. Thats how i did it seemed to work well

Takes about an hour to find cpu max with all relaxed timings
on everything else in the system.

Then about 3 days to find prime95 stable with all
the max settings for ram, fsb, etc and to let the
new compound and sink settle for temps.

I usually just run benches for the first couple of
days before I start to stress test the system.

never ends. everytime a demanding game comes out, you have to wonder if your overclock is going to crash.
so it is an ongoing thing. also, new video drivers and windows service packs sometimes let you take it farther if stability of the os is improved.

a couple of hours to find max ~ then a few days to prove it

i like to stretch it out and enjoy the process
i also like to map out results on different voltages too so i have a better idea what im dealing with.
if you have a memory ratio that will add another variable to the mix to test.
