Overheating Issue

A friend of mine called me up having some BSOD issues.

He reformatted etc, and he was still getting the BSOD.

He was looking around in the BIOS and noticed his processor was running at 100C or greater.

The computer is a 3yr. old hp with a coolermaster hsf (wasnt stock cooler because he liked the shiny coolermaster sticker).

I had him re-seat the hsf, but the temps are still outrageous.

The only thing I can think of is that the hsf is not making proper contact, but i know he is seating it properly due to the way he described it to me.

He isn't able to go out and buy a new one atm, any suggestions why it is over heating, he has had no problems with it for the 3 years it just now started to overheat.

TIA

hi TIA!

Anyhow can i guess what CPU that is??

i put money its a barton or amd XP class.

It sounds like the same problem my ex had on her machine. For some wierd reason, the chips start heating up more as time goes by then when new. Ive seen two occations of this happening, both bartons.

Theres really no way you can fix this. Only advice is get a larger sink.

is the heatsink warm to the touch (or rather scalding)? If not then its either getting bad contact or the temperature is wrong. Rebooting could be due to heat or powersupply issues (maybe something is blown on the motherboard causing it to overvolt the processor). Have him test the heatsink first.

if its that old, check for dust buildup. seriously, dust can really screw up a good cooling situation. it blocks air ways and it can also just rest on stuff and insulate it.

aigomorla: You're right on what cpu it is, i was coming to that conclusion that he would need to purchase a bigger/better hsf. Right now i think he is leaning more towards building a new rig than messing around with this one anymore.

jkresh: When he was taking the heatsink off he never mentioned it being super hot or anything, but i know its making good contact because when he reapplied the thermal paste, there was a perfect indent of the where the (hmm not really sure what to call it) transitor or w.e is sticking up on the barton.

cpl edge: he took an air compressor and blew off any dust from his system, when we found out it was overheating thats the first thing i had him do.

Thanks for all the replies

I had overheating problems with my AXP back in the day (65C anyone?). One day the PSU blew and I decided to get another one. Never got above 55C afterwards so I'm guessing it could be the PSU overvolting.

Rally Master: hmm i never thought of that but it is a definite possibility, only thing is according to his bios is that he boots up at around 100C and itll crash within seconds so it must be overvolting the hell out of it if it is.

Is the fan starting to fail?, check the RPMs and make sure they are high enough and running at consistent rate.

Perhaps the heatsink is clogged with dust?

Also the PSU can not directly "over-volt" the CPU since the motherboard converts power from either the 5v or 12v rail to 1.6v that the CPU can actually use. It is possible the PSU is supplying too much power to the motherboard but that wouldn't have any direct impact on the CPU temp (it would effect the temps of the VRMs on the board however).

oh ****** i never thought this could be the problem.

But yeah, only choices now for your friend is get a larger sink, or try replacing the HSF.

Theres no way to fix it from my knowledge, and trust me ive tried almost everything.

Well we figured it out, he tried everything else with a known good component even with a better hsf, and it was still overheating, turns out the mobo was dying and apparently overvolting his cpu, and finally died today. Hes going to build a new pc.

Thanks for all the replies and help
