Overheating Problems

Hi. I'm writing about a computer I built and some overheating issues I'm having.

Here's the specs:

Duron 1GHz (Morgan core) @ 900MHz (more on that in a min)
Asus A7N8X-X
256 Crucial DDR
30GB WD 7200RPM Hard Drive
Antec 300W case
Radeon 7500

Over a year ago, we had some major issues with this system, which at the time had a Shuttle AK31A mobo. The mobo ended up dieing, and I bought the A7N8X-X. Now, even with the new mobo, I have been messing with overheating issues...issues that result in the computer abruptly shutting down, which I can only guess is the thermal diode automatic shutoff due to a high temperature.

When I first got the board, I was havning difficulty getting Windows installed. The system was shutting down in this similar manner. Now, my HSF at the time was an SVC GC68. I changed it to a Volcano V, I was able to get Windows installed. Now, I am able perform some light takes (like word processing), but the CPU still gets pretty hot. At best, it is 40C. If we start doing something like a virus scan, play a game, or even install XP Service Pack 2, the system will shut down fairly quickly. When I power it right up, the temp is around 65-60 C.

The other oddity is that from start up, the CPU basically gradually increases in temperature. It started right now as I'm typing this at 40 or so, and about 2 mins or so later it is now into the 60's.

I really cannot understand this. I have never had any real issues with cooling CPU's this speed with either CPU. But, my suspecting is that my CPU is to blame. I have in the past messed around with trying to mess with the bridges on this chip in attempt to hard change the multiplier to a different one with a higher core voltage. In fact, this 1GHz Morgan is running at 900MHz @ 1.8v.

This board was new when we got it, the RAM was new when we got it. I can only guess that it is this processor. Any suggestions? I cannot believe that the core voltage being stuck at 1.8v is causing all this.

Any thoughts folks? Thanks

According to AMD's specs, that Duron is supposed to be running at 1.6Vcore. Running it at 1.8V could definitely make it much hotter than normal. Does the BIOS on that motherboard not have an option to change the core voltage? If not, you'll probably need to undo whatever you did to the bridges on the chip to get it back to stock voltage.

Why bother? You can get a 1.6Ghz Duron now for about $39 from newegg and be done with it. Those morgan cores run hotter than the newer semprons and durons do and you've got a lot of extra voltage running through it which is causing excess heat. Throw it out and get a newer one.

Thanks guys. My board does not have any overclocking controls in the BIOS. This morning, I took a damp cloth and tried to clean up the surface of the CPU. I'm going to let it dry for 24 hours, then use the eraser on a mechanical pencil to make sure I remove what I did to the bridges.

Hopefully that will fix it. If not, then I may take the Duron 1.6. Thanks!
