I have a 2600 Barton with a A7N8X-E Deluxe . Volcano 9 .No overclock. I'm getting temps in the bios on boot that start at about 38 and shoot up to the upper 50s in about a minute and a half and I've seen them get as high as 79. I have a good enermax power supply and more than enough case fans. It even runs those temps with the case open.
Has anyone else had this problem? It's making me nuts! I've put new thermal paste on the heatsink, and checked it for position. Could the chip just be really bad? I'm starting to get spontaneous reboots allot and it's worrying me this things gonna fry. Ideas?

Turn your heatsink around 180 degrees. The "slot" where you put the screwdriver is supposed to go toward the psu, although that makes it hard to get to. If you've got it the other way, you've got it backwards, and it isn't making contact with the cpu's core.

That was my first thought. No dice. I took it off completely, cleaned it, did the thermal paste over again and made absolutely sure it was on correctly. Same problem. Thanks for the tip though.

Sounds to me like it has bad contact with the cpu core.

Have you tested the memory with memtest? I'm just guessing that the cpu thermal sensor may be bad and the ram is what is actually failing.

If you've got another setup to test it in, try that I guess.

I actually took this stick of ram out of my other system and it's been rock solid. It's installed back in the original now and smooth as glass. Good thought though. Do you mean the thermal semsor in the bios?

You know, I've had to bend more than one heatsink's clip, to get it to make better contact with the cpu core. If it will wiggle from side to side once it's installed, then it needs to be bent down more. Just make sure you do it a little at a time, since the XP's don't have any ISF. It will be better to take it off three times, than to install it only once, but crack the core.

Is there a possibility that the clip is in the heatsink backwards? If it's ever been disassembled, then confirm that the pressure point of the clip does coincide with the location of the CPU core, and that the heatsink itself is installed like this. If you happen to have a shim between the CPU and the heatsink, remove it, and I hope it goes without saying, but don't put the Volcano 9's temperature probe under the heatsink either :Q

get rid of that thermaltake crap and get a thermalright heatsink and all will be right in the world again
