Overseas Delivery on new Volvo?

Has anyone ever done a European delivery on a car? I'd heard of it before but figured it would cost a bunch. I never imagined it would be included in the purchase price, and a discounted price at that! I'm looking at the new XC40 suv, which is brand new for 2019. That means it's hard to get a good deal on these, but looking at OSD you get a set price, which is quite a bit lower than MSRP. Oh and it includes two round trip tickets to Sweden, 1 night hotel, tour of the Volvo factory, and a few other things!

Obviously 1 night isn't enough, but I think I can manage 4 nights on my own dime for a free trip to Europe. Oh and you get to drive your own brand new car while there. After you're done they will ship it back to you in the US for free.

Am I missing something, or is this a no brainer?

My housemate's dad does his BMW pickups that way. Always comes back with a slimmer wallet and a big smile on his face.

It's a gateway thing - you will end up spending more money there than you planned, nobody just goes and gets their car and comes back, because then what would the point be?

Well of course, I realize there will be additional costs with any travel, food, hotels, gas, misc. But if i'm buying the car anyway, this seems like a way to get a great deal on the car, an awesome trip to Europe for much cheaper than otherwise.

Well then go ahead and enjoy.

Yeah, it's basically a way to get a discount on doing two things you were going to do anyway.

I have a coworker that did this with his M3, said it was one of the coolest experiences he's ever done (and you meet some other very interesting people as well).

If you have the patience I would definitely go for it, but from what I've heard OSD takes longer. Plus the XC40 is getting rave reviews, and from what I've seen lurking Swede Speed Forum they are getting tons of orders.

I put my deposit down at the beginning of December for an R-Design, through Care By Volvo, and my current estimate is April 6th build start and May 22nd delivery. With OSD you're probably looking at a 2-3 months before it will be available for pickup overseas, then another 2-4 weeks for shipping.

Yup, I hear you, but I think i'm ok waiting. I haven't even test driven the car yet, so i'm not putting in an order until I do. My local dealer is supposed to have some demo units within the next couple weeks. I realize it probably wont be until Aug/Sept until the car is ready, but my current car is fine.

I did it for BMW a few years ago and it was a great experience. Local dealers didn't want to haggle much for a factory order, but a dealer in Atlanta had upfront pricing.

Picked the car up at the factory, drove it around Europe and dropped it off at the dock before flying home.

How long was your shipping time back to the US? I looked into it years ago and shipping was like 2-3 MONTHS which was a deal killer for me at the time.

It took about 30 days but I researched the the quickest port for drop off beforehand. I picked it up at the performance center in South Carolina where they put me up in a hotel, and then drove some of their cars on a track. Awesome experience overall, I'd do it again even though there's no savings if you treat it like a vacation.

I finally got to test drive the XC40 today. It fulfilled all my expectations. I drove the BMW X1 and Lexus NX300 last weekend for a comparison. I actually really liked the NX300, the seats were very comfortable, but the cargo in the back was tiny, and the features weren't up to par with the XC40. After getting my hands on the XC40 I felt confident in moving forward. So I put in my OSD order, target date is July 12th, though I doubt that will happen. I'm expecting Aug/Sept. Very excited!

I badly want a V60 Polestar.
I too don't want the lifetime supply of surstromming.
I believe the surstromming promotion actually hurts sales.

Just an update my July 12th date held up! Though I moved it to the next week due to other constraints with work. Planning to go with my best friend and spend a week checking out castles and exploring. Also found out we get economy plus seats and access to the business class lounge on layovers. Can't wait!

I did the exact same thing and I ordered the xc40 overseas delivery. How long did it take for you to hear from volvo. I paid my down payment about a month ago and I haven’t received anything from volvo!

I placed my order April 3rd. I just finally got my package in the mail today. I wouldn't wait, call the 800 number! 1-800-631-1667 They can give you your order number which you can use to start arrangements. I called last week after reading a post on swedespeed forum. I'm glad I didn't wait as hotels and flights were already filling up for July.

Why not do China trip instead? I thought that is where your Volvo is being built??
They have indeed moved production for the XC60 to China, which is sad because you can no longer do OSD for that model. The XC40 is built in the Belgium factory.

I'm pretty certain XC60 is built in Gothenburg as well. But maybe the XC60 for US market is built in China though.
S90 is only built in China for all markets though.
