It can hurt him and others. Antibiotic abuse is rampant in the U.S. Health care providers are being pressured by patients who want 'something' for their problem. Patient's doctor shop until they get what they want. That's why were having problems with MRSA.

I've had dumb patients yell at the doctor and call him all sorts of names because they didn't get an antibiotic for a cold. The chances that you get a bacterial infection for minor symptoms and negative lab results are pretty slim.

For example: A gastrointestinal virus sucks, but all you do is drink water, get rest, pee out of your bum and vomit out the other side for about 24 hours. What if your baby vomits? Do you call an ambulance? Unless it's going on for more than 24 hours you don't go to an ER for it. Pvssies.

The answer to the question is to wait for the lab results, IMO. Condoms and the people that use them aren't infallible.

That's a big negative, overuse of antibiotics results in antibiotic resistant bacteria in the everyday environment, which means you're FUBAR'd if they infect you because normal antibiotics don't work worth crap.

Or charge him for the antibiotics which probably don't work as well.

There is only educated guesses at this point so ABs could potentially do more harm than good.

Wow, remarkable amount of ATOT has gotten it right so far.

BTW, as long as we're talking unicorns here, both lupus and sarcoidosis can present and do whatever the hell they want. I'll have to remember to cram that into my differential in the future.

No, as you don't want ot give antibiotics out like candy. As more antibiotics are prescribed, microbes and the like can become more tolerant and resistant. Amirite?

I'm not exactly sure what you expected people to get wrong, actually. I think its fairly common knowledge nowadays that giving antibiotics out like candy is a bad idea. Most people just don't take the advice to heart. I'd be more surprised if 25% of the people thought giving out antibiotics for someone whos waiting on test results was a good idea. Though, people also think a navy seal can beat an mma fighter in hand to hand combat....so....

I remember 10-15 years ago being told that overuse of antibiotics was a major problem because of resistant strains. (my mom was a nurse, so I am sure it was her.) Funny thing is, someone told me that the milkshakes at McD's were loaded with antibodies and thats part of the problem. Looking at that now, I think its pretty comical, but the idea was still there.

Antibacterial soaps, desire to overuse antibiotics, might bring about the Black Death Part Duex. We shall see.

Wait, it isn't life threatening. Tell him that it might be an STD and let him make the choice of getting it on without telling his partners "Hey, I might have an STD". It can be pretty bad to treat someone for something if you have no clue what they have, you might just make matters worse.

He's not asymptomatic, he's got burning on urination and a lesion on his penis. You should have swabbed the lesion as well for a stat gram stain. The lack of WBC and leukesterase on urine lead away from UTI.

edit: reading again there really is only SUBJECTIVE evidence of disease and no OBJECTIVE evidence. I would hold off on tx until labs return.

the answer is: patients lie and there's supposedly a number of people walking around with "asymptomatic" bacterial STDs.
the test writer admitted that this question could go either way depending on your own comfort level

Where's the option for breaking into his home to look for environmental factors and/or Amyloidosis?

I'm sure the seal could. I'm sure the seal would also start the fight without telling the mma fighter, possible even while mma fighter is sleeping.

and stop giving out antibiotic pez
