Better to be unemployed than enter that business and go into a lot of debt.
Rule #1 - never use your own money. Always use someone else's money. Find some venture capital, a grant, loan from the small business administration. If you're a minority, particularly a woman, it is especially easy to get a loan or even a grant from the SBA. If you're a white male, forget it, because all of us honkies have at least one, but typically more than one, filthy rich uncle, who not only is descended from a wealthy slave trader or plantation owner, but is willing to give us as much money as we want on demand...doncha know?
The only money of your own which you may want to use is to cover your living expenses for the first six months while you are getting your business off the ground. Do not use your own money to fund your business venture and that means personal credit cards.
Yes, there are examples of people who have done this, but they are islands in a sea of failures and personal bankruptcies. Its too 'easy' to start a business without proper planning or understanding with one's own money or personal credit. Obtaining venture capital or small business loans is a right of passage - a litmus test - in that before you can persuade others to give you money, you have to do your homework - all of it - and have a clear picture of what you intend to do (market research and a business plan).
Since this will be your first business endeavor, I suggest sticking with something that doesn't involve a lot of capital up-front, and retail would require a lot of capital. The only thing you have that can be used to compete in the market is your intellectual property. Your intellectual property can be reproduced as many times as you want on demand and it hardly costs anything.
What do I mean? B & M computer shops charge around $40 - $45 an hour for labor for computer consulting, service, repairs, upgrades, etc. They have to charge that much because they have a lot more expenses than you. You can work for a lot less than that: $20 - $25 an hour and virtually all of it will be profit since you have few expenses.
Start your own computer SERVICES business and make your money primarily on your labor charges and sevice fees. Find an area with lots of busy two-income professional or middle class households (folks with money), start handing out flyers, business cards, do a little direct mail. If after a year you're still around, and you've managed to make some money at it, your business experience will be a big plus in helping you secure additional funding.
