please tell me your thoughts. anything is fine

no, DSLRs are out of my price range. And I dont want to make that big of an investment right now, especially with all the lenses and all.

I just want something better than my current A85

I've had it for 5-6 months, took about 2000 pics so far and I loved it. Video quality is excellent and that really came in handy during our roadtrip from VA-UT. Not sure what else you want to know about it since a lot of reviews on dpreview and dscresource have covered pretty much everything

I played with one a bit, I ended up getting an SD700IS because I didn't see myself really carrying around the S3 enough to justify upgrading from my A40. Plus I thought down the road if I really wanted to get into photography, I could go DSLR and still have a use for the SD700 as a portable one.

Not that any of that matters, but maybe something useful for you in here?

awesome. yea i read the reviews at dpreview and steves-digicams. They both like it. But I wanted to get user opinions of some long time owners as opposed to someone doing a review based on a couple days worth of usage.

you havent had any problems? Ive had my A85 for about 2 years now, and I dont know why, but its pics now are considerably noisier than when i first got it.

glad to hear the vid quality is excellent. thats another reason why im considering this over a DSLR. I know I know, I should get a camcorder if i wanna take vids, but i cant afford both a camera and a camcorder (well I can, but would rather not). I like having the video option in my camera even though it can only take 3 mins worth at a time. A picture doesnt always capture the moment...such as if im on top of a mountain or a on tropical beach, I like to take a short vid to remind myself how peaceful it was there

I really enjoy mine. I'm by no means a professional photographer, and I admit I have not used most of the neat features it has, but it's been really nice.

Image stabilization seems to be a problem for me, I have to use a tripod for any pics I take it seems, but I'm sure I just haven't set it up right.

The optics on this are great though! You'll love the colors and sharpness.

so if you try to take a hand held pic with indoor light and no flash, it comes out blurry? Thats one of my main gripes with my A85.

 no problem.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed the S3 for the very short period of time I was using it.

I've had this camera for a few months, and I love it.
1. The video+audio quality is surprisingly good (you can do 640x480, at 30fps, 320x240 at 30fps or 60fps) but video obviously takes up a lot of memory.
2. Initially, I felt the image stabilizer didn't contribute much, but last month I went to an airshow and tried the camera out. With 12x optical zoom and image stabilization on, I got excellent photos of the planes in the air.
3. I tried the camera out at the Georgia Aquarium. The low lighting makes it difficult to take good pictures with a point-and-shoot. But I used the S3 in manual mode and got great photos. One of my friends had a Nikon DSLR though, so his photos were better than mine.

This camera is obviously no compact point-and-shoot. But it's still small enough to comfortably carry around. Go to a store and try it out (if you haven't already) so you can determine if you are comfortable with it's size. If you've mainly used compact point-and-shoot cameras and want to upgrade, but feel hesitant to move to DSLR, this camera is a good choice.

I got my wife a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ7K about a month ago for $258 and she loves it. It is lighter and smaller than the Cannon and has a larger 2.5" LCD. It has about the same specs as the Cannon too. Even a point and shoot dummy like me can use it.

Any suggestions or inputs between the s3 and the sd800, is the size the real difference between the two? If that's the case, why wouldn't someone just get the sd800?

The S3 will give you better pictures than your A85, but if you have a sharp eye you will notice some noise/blurring. You need a DSLR if you want your photos to be that good.

I'm not sure on the SD800, but the 700 is severely lacking in the manual controls department for one thing.

Depend on what you want. If you only care for the IS and not for the extra manual control in the S3, go for the SD800. Also, the SD800 supports ISO 1600 (according to the website, this cuts down on blurring indoors).

edit: The SD800 also has the newer Digic III processor (the S3 has a Digic II). And an extra megapixel (which doesn't really matter at all)

I had the S2 IS. Dont sell yourself short. the Panasonic FZ series is a much better camera IMO. This is coming from ownership of the Canon and ownership of a FZ20 and FZ5 from Panasonic. The problem I had with the canon is the auto focus. It was getting 75% of them off and for shots that were right off the cuff I was getting pissed because they were out of focus and missed alot of shots. Also I dont know about the S3IS but the S2 did not have a low light light and in low light you can tottaly forget about an in focus shot at all.

The only thing I dont like about the Panasonic is its movie format is in quick time and needs to be converted over if your going to put on disk to play on a dvd player or edit. Other then that I can say, and review can back me up, that it gets 99% of its focus all the time. Before getting rid of the S2 IS I took the same shot with the Canon and the FZ5 and dare I say the FZ5 looked alot better. The pictures are clear and chrisp, and in focus. So if your going for thoes once in a life time shots where you turn it on and have to take the shot or lose it, chances are you will get it wilth a panasoinic. Dont get me wrong though, when the Canon did get the shots right the picture was sweet, but it did me no good for 90% of my shots of are nature and my family, and need the shot taken of the moment, and cant tell an animal or my son when he is doing something of the moment, to go do it 3-4 more times because the camera was out of focus.

Just food for thought, check out all the reviews on the canon and on the panasonic FZ 5, 7, 20, and the new 30 has a manual focus ring like the professional film cameras. Also all of them have a a professional Lecia Lens and 12x optical. And please what ever camera you look at if your going for close ups make sure to get the best Optical zoom and NEVER use the digital if you can help it for it makes the pictures suck.

I have had my FZ5 for over a year now and well over 5000 shots taken without a single problem. Yes it has its own battery, I think all the panasonics do, but you get more shots off the panny battery then you would the aa type and extras on ebay are super cheap. I picked up 2 extra batteries for my camera for under $10 shipped.

Pics taken with my camera:

More coming, just need to upload the ones my father, a professional photographer, took with my camera.

They're hugely different in size, weight, zoom, probably CCD size, probably manual controls, and I'm sure plenty of other things.

yes, but supposedly S3 noise is no better or worse than the competition (namely, Panasonic's FZ7). Also, the S3 uses very little noise reduction (compared to the H2 and the FZ7), so there's more detail in the stock image. The noise is grainy, rather than blotchy, so it's not too difficult to PP that noise out if you need to.

Bought one for my wife's birthday last week, she loves it.

We'll still hang on to my A520, b/c the S3 isn't "pocket-friendly." But, for instances where a bigger camera will be okay to tote around, it's going to be great. Gotta love the button for the movie mode.
