Oxo salad spinner

This usually sells for $25, but now its $18 (the smaller size still sells for $20). Cook's Illustrated rated this the best spinner, and I've been very pleased with it.

Features:
Simple operation requires only one hand
Nonslip knob is soft and cushioned; brake button stops spinning with a fingertip
Great for washing and drying lettuce, herbs, greens
Plunge-style knob locks down for easy storage
Dishwasher-safe on top rack

(FWIW- I'm kind of a kitchen gadget junkie as well as a computer geek )

What in the world is this for?

On that note... do they make a device that shreds lettuce?

Okay this is probably more divisive than the 'William Hung' thread!

Myself, I am a die-hard shaker and laugh loudly at people who feel inclined to buy devices to dry produce. (Can you hear me from there? Yes, I'm laughing!)

The world needs more redundant plastic crap. Goodwill thanks you in advance for what will surely end up in one of their stores right next to the waffle irons, salad shooters, seal-a-meals and electric can-openers.

To each their own. After washing fresh greens, its really useful to have them bone-dry for certain recipes. I probably use mine 2-3 times a week since I bought it 2 years ago- nothing else can get greens as dry as quickly or easily. While I do agree an electric can opener might not be the most useful invention, it certainly did help me when my wrist was broken. And if you've never had yeasted waffles fresh off the iron with pure maple syrup, you don't know what you're missing.

By the way, I'm surprised it took 30 minutes for a tossed salad comment- I think you guys are slipping a bit

The beauty of a salad spinner is that you can make enough salad for two days and still have it be nice and fresh the second day. Just spin it dry, then bag it, squeeze out all the air, and stick it in the meat drawer in your fridge.

Shaking just doesn't work as well. Particularly if you actually wash the lettuce in a bowl with a little soap. (How do you think they get all the dirt off the lettuce you see in the stores?) Gets rid of the pesticides, herbicides, and all the hands that touch it before it ever gets to your table.

Lettuce, to respond to another post, should always be shredded manually. (Except I'm a practical fellow and chop the hearts of the romaine, the hearts of chicory, and the radicchio.)

If you eat a lot of salads this device is mandatory in my book. I purchased one of those cheap hand crank $3-$4 spinners at Kmart about 2 year ago. Needless to say it was undersized and the handle broke after about 3 weeks of use. What do you expect for $3 right? I then bought the OXO for $24.99 from Profitt's and it's worked great for 2 years now. It's built much studier and is much larger than the Kmart cheapy. I've never seen them cheaper than $24.99 so those of you that picked one up for $13 got a good deal.
