Maybe a Cheetah in SCSI RAID but single SCSI vs my RAID IDE is better and faster with less noise...trust me I know have it plus this debate has been rubbed till the skins to the bone

I would too if I wanted 1/6th the storage space, a higher price tag, a louder drive, and decreased performance in the apps and games that slow down my machine. I also wouldn't look forward to micro-managing my storage as if we had turned back the clock 3 years given the much larger data and program files I deal with today.

My next storage upgrade will probably be Raptors as soon as an nForce board is available with SB-integrated SATA RAID (or I move to an Intel platform). 2 x 36GB (or possibly larger) Raptors in RAID 0 to complement my current 3ware RAID 0 will give the best of both worlds: tons of storage as well as SCSI RAID performance....at a fraction of the cost.

A single 15k drive will wipe the floor with any ide drive combination, raid, etc. It all depends on how you set things up...

SCSI RAID: There is no comparison! I'm not talking about a pair of drives in RAID0! SCSI RAID wasn't designed for that. If that's how you're using it, pity. :frown:

Space? Perhaps $/GB is what your're after. You can supercharge a Mustang GT and spend $33,000 or spend $124,000 for a Twin Turbo 911 and both will cover about the same amount of pavement in a straight line at the strip but we all know what the real story here is. Same with IDE RAID vs. SCSI RAID.

A single 15.3 with 18 or 36GB for root connected via GLAN with RAID50 multi-terabyte handles the storage/speed/noise issue quite nicely. Expensive as hell, but then again if you want to fly first class you'll have to pay the price. You can always go the diskless workstation route as well...

About risk. Well, we all have to take risks. If people didn't we would still believe the world is flat for crissakes! :Q SCSI reliability is very good. I put more trust in a ten drive RAID0 array then a single IDE drive. Either way I still have my stuff backed up. And that is being backed up. And that is backed up! After all it's MY STUFF! Is YOUR STUFF backed up?

*stomps foot* My stuff is backed up!

You guys, I tell you...someday, I'll have the big toys to play with. You guys are arguing Enterprise-level storage; I'm playing on my home LAN fer cryin'out loud!

50 Terabyte SCSI RAID50? I could buy a HOUSE for what that costs...do you guys need friends? I want to be your friend so I can come to your work and play w/your toys!! Ha! I crack me up.

My box at work is a dual P3-550 Xeon Dell workstation. I have two 10K SCSI drives. The box is quick, but it's honestly not faster than my rig at home. Possibly, a lot may be due to the fact that my work rig runs on a 100MHz FSB and my home rig a 200MHz FSB. I also have a Gig of ram at home and only 256 at work. *shrug* Who knows?

For mission-critical apps, I would not trust RAID0 of any flavor, whether it's IDE or SCSI. That's what RAID 1 or better is for. That's what tape drives are for.

But for my games and MP3s at home, I've got 230GB (after formatting) of RAID 0 goodness for less than $300. (Thanks, HotDeals!) Can't beat that with a bat.

Wow, nice. How noisy are those drives? My two WDSE 120GB drives are brand new, but they do have a not-too-loud high-pitched whine to them. Hoping that fades a little over time. My rig is pretty quiet..the noise is perceptible.

Shuttleteam,

What is that benchmark called? How does it compare to ATTO? (I'm not real hip on the HD benchmarks...)

*edit*
OK, I see it's called "Drivebench." How long has it been around? Is it a standard HD bmark?

Some person on the StorageReview forums wrote that program. If I knew their name, I'd give credit.

I predominately use it to benchmark mapped drives since it can ring every drop of bandwidth out of the LAN.

If you choose the same size as ATTO, your results are usually the same. Not a very good metric on the high end RAID side, but good for finding big troubles in short order.

Not noisy at all. I really have been pleased with the Raptors.

Here is my ATTO Benchmark to add for comparison.

Dayum. 10MB/s more than mine!! That's some awesome speed, there. Back when I bought my 8RDA+, I looked at the Asus 87NXX...Asus' NForce2 offering as it has onboard SATA RAID. But at that time, SATA drives had just hit the streets and were way expensive...when they become more mainstream, that may be my next option. Personally, I see SCSI's market shrinking over the next few years IF SATA continues to be developed.

Your disk(s) will no longer be visible outside of the Windows realm. Dynamic disks are not recommended unless you need them! (i.e. software mirror, stripe, etc.)

Some individuals swear to use it to improve write speeds especially under Win2k SP3 and WinXP with SCSI disks. I've never observed this deficiency under these conditions. (that was NOT hardware related!)

I am beginning to think that I may have set up my raid all wrong

I have 2 wd raptors as my boot drive and while I am very impressed with the speed, I am beginning to think I should just use a single 1200JB as a boot drive and use the raid for my work/games. Right now I have 2 1200JBs and one is for backup and the other is for games. I would raid them too but my motherboard only has sata raid.

would it would be better to set up the drives as 1200JB<boot> /Raptor-Raid-0<games> /1200JB<backup> ?

the smaller capacity drive for games shouldnt matter, I delete stuff I beat/dont play anymore frequently
