I have been holding-off on upgrading since the P4 640 @ 4.4GHz rig that I had was hard to beat IMO, but after seeing some of the Presler results roll in... I just had to get in the game....

I picked-up a retail P-D 920 and paired it with a refurb ASUS P5WD2-Premium mobo to lessen the $$ outlay. The Processor specs:

Product Code: BX80553920SL94S
MM#: 878915
FPO/Batch#: L541B403
Pack Date: 12/30/05

I am using watercooling, which consists of:

Swiftech APOGEE waterblock
Swiftech Bay Res /MCP-350 pump
Swiftech RadBox external radiator mount
Heater core radiator
120MM Vantec Stealth fan with shroud

Other specs in sig....

I put the rig together, and went straight for 300MHz FSB... (4.2GHz) It stalled at the WinXP boot screen. :frown: I checked the NB heatsink on the ASUS, and it damn near burnt my finger. After installing a fan on the NB, it was an easy boot into WinXP.

I installed ASUS probe, and found that this mobo has a wicked VCore droop. 4.2GHz was failing in one instance of SP-2004 because of the voltage dip with both cores loaded. I had to set the BIOS VCore to 1.42v to get 1.34v under 100% load. I went on pass dual SP-2004 for 19 Hours , was satisfied with the stability, and stopped it.

It was now time to tweak the RAM, and I was surprised to see how many dividers were available. I worked my way up to 900MHz DDR, testing with Memtest86+. I ran though 10 loops of tests 5 and 8 until I reached 900MHz, then let all tests run for a few hours with no errors. This was the fastest I have ever seen this RAM run, and was very pleased to see an Everest memory read score of 8729 MB/s :Q

I am very happy with this upgrade so far.... I will be posting benchmarks and video encoding results in this thread (And my AutoGK Thread) as time allows. If there is something you would like to see run, LMK, and I will try to include the results. I have some Super pi results for now....

1M: 27s
2M: 1m 3s
4M: 2m 18s
8M: 5m 6s
16M: 11m 21s
32M: 24m 37s

EDIT: Observation: The P5WD2-P has a passive heatsink over the MOSFETs that depends upon air-flow from the processor HSF to cool it. When watercooling, (No air-flow) this heatsink gets extremely hot under load. I thought that this may be contributing to the VCore droop. After positioning a fan over it, I monitored ASUS Probe, and watched the VCore increase from 1.34v to 1.38v. Still drooping, but better nonetheless. I was able to knock-back the VCore a couple of notches to obtain the 1.34v this current OC requires.

Temps can be seen in the stability screenshot link above.... (58C both cores @ 100% load) I am using a low RPM Vantec Stealth 120mm fan with a shroud on the radiator...

I'm still tempted to get that motherboard and see where I can get my 920 to, although I may try the BSEL mod again.

EDIT: P.S. very much looking forward to your AutoGK run.

stevty2889: The P5WD2-P is a sweet mobo with all the bells and whistles. I did not think it would impress me compared to the Fatal1ty AA8XE that I had.. but it does... and continues to do so.

Yes, I will get to the AutoGK ASAP.... I do alot of encoding, and this is one of the primary reasons for the dual core upgrade. I have a feeling it is going to kick ass.... Your results with the 920 were impressive to me...

58C on water? Damn... Nice OC but I think I'll wait on Yonah (to be actually available) before jumping ship.

Considering that my 830 ran at 57c on water at stock speeds..that doesn't look so bad.

Nice. In regards to the voltage droop, that behavior is in line with observations I've made with the voltage supply to the CPU on overclocked preslers. It looks like 5ghz attempts will require a motherboard with beefier regulators.

Well, all my systems are air-cooled so those temps are still a bit scary to me.

Why spend $230 on a motherboard and $250 on watercooling and $270 for a chip ($750) to get the same performance as a $300 ship and a $80 mobo ($380) ?

I really don;t see it. Is it just that 4.26 sounds fast ?

Dude, do us a favor and stay out of the Intel threads if all you're going to do is pimp. These guys appear to be having a lot of fun with the Presler's. Just let it go man, and get over the fact that, yes, people still buy Intel even though you are nauseated by it.
Now go cash your AMD commision check. And by all means, give it a rest. We know AMD is good. Intel is good also apparently.

I got my Gigabyte 975x board there, free shipping on it. But yes, eWiz was definitely cheaper then everywhere else when I was shopping around for a 975 board. If you use froogle to find the board at eWiz, it takes the price down an extra 1-2 bucks.

Now if only Dell would hurry up with my 930...

I only spent $140.00 on the mobo.... I already had the watercooling gear... and the chip was what I wanted. I would buy a top-end mobo even if I was running AMD....

I also like using my SATA Plextor 716 without jumping through hoops, and using the 3 other SATA ports knowing that the bus is locked on ALL of them. (Unlike many nForce4 mobos) No patches to install either....

As for 4.2GHz being fast, go on over to the AutoGK thread and best my encoding time with your rig (real world results).....

The only thing that concerns me about the OC is that you had to modify the northbridge cooling system to get it cool enough during OC. This is going to be a problem with just about any board using that chipset during OC ops. Might there be another board you'd recommend that would give the same OC without requiring the hardware mod?

Other than that, awesome OC! Keep it up.

Keys, stevety was over here last weekend, and we couldn't get past 3.1 Until he found that you have to OC the PCIE to get a good OC (which I think is insane, video cards may not work correctly). I have played with a 920 too, and I just don't see all the hype. They still run hot and require an exspensive motherboard to get a good OC. Technonut replied that he onlt paid $140 for his, and thats still almost twice what I paid for my 820 mobo. He already had the watercooling setup, and it still runs hot.

I was just trying to make a point for those that don't have $750 to play around with.

As for your comment on my commision check, I don't work for any high tech comany, and don;t get any checks, I just know value when I see it, and the 920 is not it.

EDit: as to the comment on what OC with air, stevty had his at 3.64 on air, but again with a much more exspensive motherboard, and with the PCIE OC'ed like he had to, you may not be able to use a high-end video card (I think his was integrated graphics, and still had artifacts)

Mark you are to the CPU/Processor forum what Rollo is to the video card section. Rollo loves Nvidia and no matter what he will always bash on ATI, you love AMD and will always troll on Intel threads.

Congrats on the great chip and amazing overclock.
