Well that's pretty-much a summary of how cults work. They tell you you can't trust anyone outside of the group and its leadership.

However, what makes it so effective is that it's not without an element of truth. It's not hard to find real examples of the media, the state, and 'experts' lying to you. They do it all the time.

(It gets worse when much of the media are owned by cultists or when a cult takes over the damn state).
