I swear to god I saw a 2.3 Ghz Intel laptop made by Alienware a month ago.

I think it was a P4 2.2. Either way it was the desktop processor. Going to go to BB today to configure it at the Creation Staion laptop builder section. Might go ahead and get this 1500 series. Anyone want to comment?

Thanks

A lot of OEMs are using desktop chips in their laptops now...

There has even been word of laptops without batteries coming to market in Asia.

They haven't been for a long time already.

In some laptops they are. I might configure it with a the cheapest processor P4 Celeron 1.4-M. And then later down the road get the newer P4 2.2 or higher. At the compaq site, you can bring it down to around $1300 with the P4 Celeron 1.4-M. Nothing set in stone yet, I am known for going out shopping and coming back empty handed - LOL Either way I'll keep you all informed.

BTW - what attracted me was the 5.5lb weight of this.

One more question, I promise - hehe Would the Northwood processors work on this laptop also? I think it will as long as you get the 400 FSB right? The memory in the system is 266DDR. LMK.

Thanks again

Has anyone had trouble getting BestBuy to honor the $1599 price for this lappy? My boss is trying to buy one and they are giving him the run around. It comes up in store over $1900, also, there seems to be a question whether the 10% off is actually applied yet as the $200 off instantly doesn't match a 10% off figure. At $1400, this would truly be a HOT Deal.

it's not like the best buy employees have a choice over whether or not they honor the price.
the prices are generated over the computer, through the computer creation station. whatever that computers tells you, that's the price.
each component in the laptop generates its own sku number which generates its own price. so they don't ring in one price, they ring in a price for each of the components: like cpu, hd, etc.

one problem though - $200 off of $1899 is definitely not = 10% off. im going in tonight so ill check it out. and that number is supposed to be the 10% off, there's no more discounts besides the $100 rebate. even at $1599 it's still a hot as hell deal imho.

don't forget that:
1. it takes ~ 2 weeks to get it built and shipped
2. shipping = $60 for the cheapest option
3. gotta pay tax
4. this provides awesome numbers for the Computer department. Don't be surprised if they don't let you leave without buying the 3 year PSP (Performance Service Plan, ie: extended warranty). It's $220. They'll spend all day working you to get that. sometimes we "run out" of laptops if someone won't buy a PSP.

Thanks for the info. I didn't get the chance to go to BB yet. Let us know how it goes. Configure with the fewest oprions just for kicks too. Wondering how the pricing compares to Compaq's built to order? I'm going this Saturday, that's supposed to be when the 10% expires too. I really don't consider it a HOT deal but warm. Hey, if I apply for a BB credit card wouldn't I get the extra percent off for my first purchase (I think it was a 5%?)? Can it be combined? If you can then it's hot - hehe

I hear ya but last night he went into BestBuy, pointed to the add, and they wouldn't sell it to him at that price.

that's the problem =/ it doesn't matter what the advertisement says, the price that comes out of the computer is the final price. it could be they did something wrong when they were ringing up the prices up front. or that the wrong configuration was selected. if the ad. says one thing, and the computer creation station tells you another, the ad. loses and the computer wins.
at my store, managers will only adjust mistake/mismatched/misadvertised prices if you buy a PSP.
i didnt get a chance to check out the price tonight - i went to the store but had to do truck. ill be going there tomorrow to get my paycheck. so you know i'll definitely be there.

Teezle,

Where do you get 5.5lb? The 2800T is a 2 spindle design with no floppy & removable media bay (e.g. CD or DVD, etc) and weights 5.4-5.6lb depending on screen.

The 1500 is a 3 spindle design with floppy & non removable optical drive - I think it weights close to 7lb. It is in a thicker case (maybe larger as well) - it probably needs more space to cool the desktop processor.

Weight: 7.9 lbs with CD-ROM and floppy drive
Little heavy but it's not too bad.
I do hope you sit down when you use it.
For what you're getting and the price that you're getting it for.
You're getting a beast of a machine that's very well built...

Did anyone actually get a chance to go to BB and price one out? I just got the BB credit card and will buy it soon. Just wanted to know how the BB buil-to-order pricing compares to directly from Compaq? Let us know if you have any info.

Thanks
