Based on a quick read, I wonder if this isn't a ploy to establish a legal basis for Orin Hatch's latest hare-brained scheme, letting the MPAA/RIAA damage computers of people they suspect of copyright infringement. Let the FBI deputize them, then turn them loose for some good, old-fashioned vigilante "justice".

I think I'll download some files or something. Everytime I hear of this rape of your rights to use and share your personal computer with whomever you want, the freakin government wants to either tax the hell out of it, or criminalize it, not to mention the orwellian tactic that asshole hatch wants implimented, destroying your PC if you cross the line that HE draws in the sand, with the stick RIAA gave him.

Eh...
SEC. 7. INFRINGEMENT WARNING NOTICE.
The Attorney General shall, within 3 months after the date of the enactment of this Act, set forth criteria under which copyright owners designated by the Attorney General will be able to use the seal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for deterrent purposes in connection with physical and digital copies and phonorecords and digital transmission of their works of authorship.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are they saying that the AG can designate copyright holders as FBI deputies of sorts? That's a bit excessive...

Yes, folks, this is the same as has been pointed out in the other 2 threads sdmca and RIAA V Verizon threads.

The States are now "Deputizing" the MPAA and RIAA as well.

You know, I've seen the U.S. heading towards "Marshall Law" or a "Nanny State" as many people have said but I thought it was going to be people in the Government system not outside the system bringing the Wrath.

A HA...And the truth comes out!!!

The senator, a composer who earned $18,000 last year in song writing royalties, acknowledged Congress would have to enact an exemption for copyright owners from liability for damaging computers. He endorsed technology that would twice warn a computer user about illegal online behavior, "then destroy their computer."

Obviously he is terrified of losing his royalties!!

I can see it now! Since the RIAA and MPA haven't been successful at making "piracy" sound bad enough, their marketing people will come up with a more frightful name like WMD (World-wide Media Distribution). As deputies of the Feds, and in the interest of national security, they will arrest suspected media terrorists, I mean thieves, and hold them incognito for months without charges while they are interrogated about who is in their trading cell. They will develop profiles that will result in the random searches of the property of those who fit the profile. Remember that this is all in the interest of national security. If the RIAA and MPA members don't make enough billions it will weaken the country. We need movies and music videos to spread Western influence throughout the 3rd world.

What can they possibly do to your computer, besides wipe your hard drive? That's bad enough, I suppose, but I keep hearing "destroy your computer". Not like it's going to go up in smoke.

No they will confiscate your computer as "Contraband", their word not mine and sell the Computer at Auction (after hard drive has been erased) within 60 days.

Whatever happened to the 5 major record labels getting together and illegally conspiring to fix cd prices at extremely high prices? Have they already paid off the investigators and judges or what?

Well considering many motherboards have winbond chips that can be modified in Windows, they could overclock your processor to twice its speed without you having to reboot, potentially frying it.

How's that for starters?

We'll use carrier pigeons to deliver them. They won't even know about it.

They'd try to ban (exterminate to the point of extinction) carrier pigeons. At least then we'd have all the animals rights groups on our side.
