P3-700E or P3-1000EB?

I currently own an Athlon 700 Classic slot A. I had very marginal success overclocking, only reaching 800mhz using a goldfinger device, and even this config wasn't 100% stable. I'm currently looking at P3 stuff, and I would like at least 933-1000 mhz performance. I've heard a massive amount of stories concerning the 700E processors and how they easily clock to 933, even higher in some cases.

Given my newbie status to overclocking and my lack of success, should I feel comfortable buying a 700E hoping it will hit 933, or should I just spend the extra $120+ on the 1000EB and get guaranteed performance? CPU databases on overclockers.com seem to verify the ease of overclocking the 700E series.

I suppose this should have been a poll, and I'm positive it's been asked a million times before, but I was curious as to what some of you would do in this situation.

Don't waste the money, go with the 700e, of course all you will hear in here is get a duron.

I ugraded from an Athlon 550(at 864) to a PIII700. Mine easily hit 933. It posted and got to Windows at default voltage. Upping the voltage a notch got me total stability. I can't recall anyone posting a story about how their 700 wouldn't hit 933. So I think it's about as safe a bet as any.

Your best bet is to go to the For Sale/Trade forum. Look up compuwiz1 or some other quality seller. They sell pretested 700E's @ 1GHz (along with other processors). I bought a 700E@933 at 1.75V from compuwiz1 that will do 933 at 1.65V stable (18 hrs with Dharma CPU stability test; 4 hours Quake III loops). I can get it to 1GHz, but have not tested it for stability.

I would agree with lifeguard1999 but remember to get a good m/board to exploit to max o/clock potential. the rest of your h/ware should cope admirably.

Get a socket based Amd like a 1000mhz tbird and OC it to 1300mhz

My PIII 600E hit a gig amazingly. Currently running @950 stable.
