yup . not a problem. easyest way i've found ( forget where i first saw this, so my appoligies for not giving proper credit ) guessing that your cooler has the 4 pins and slide clip. assemble the unit and measure how much space you need to take-up between the back of the chip and the clip.keep in mind you want a fairly tight fit.
disasemble a ballpoint pen or two, cut in to 4 lengths.a dremmil works great here. and start fitting them . don't force things too hard.
if it's all assembled and your chip is bowed as you sight along the conection edge, your too tight.
if you need to use bolts instead then write back
good luck

So you have a P-III that someone physically removed the cartidge from? Or is it a later SECC2 P-III?

Its a PIII that someone evidently took off the pastic piece. I got it for free for buying some other stuff so I was wondering what my options were.

go get a cooler and install it. use some themal paste and just make sure you don't have any metal touching anything except the slug. the slightest touch elseware and you'll short out the chip and it won't boot.
if you live anywhere near L.A. i will do it for ya if you like.

p.s. any idea what the chip is ? speed ?

IMO, the ideal hsf if you use chuck 340 method is the TennMax P3 STF Cooler !

nice lookin cooler bacillus. does it come close to eating a memory slot ?
i'm all out of slot 1's now but i'm hanging on to the coolers i was using. The Arctic Cooler. they were originally hewlet packard orbs they built for their servers, with the fans that were good for like 5000 years. they were being modified by the guys who came up with Arctic Silver.
