I'm going from an Abit PIII mobo with Windows XP installed, to an Epox 8k3a amd board. Do you think this will require reinstalling XP?

I'd do it. You're changing a heck of a lot of system componets, including the special instructions supported, the interfaces on the motherboard, how things comminucate with each other...I'd do it just to be safe.

You should be able to get by with a repair install...then you don't have to reinstall everything. If the repair install would fail then you still can do the full clean install and only lose a half hour if the repair install fails.

Just ignore the registry mullarky at the top and do the bottom route.
I just shutdown my rig, rip bits out, pop new bits in - boot off XP CD, ignore first repair prompt and continue as if doing a clean install.
When you get to just before the patritioning mullarky it will examine existing OS's and then find your existing and ask if you want to repair - Say yes
When its done its stuff you have a completely new fresh install with all your old apps/desktops and settings from the old install
Ive done this since XP first came out and have gone through over 6x mobo's etc including uniprocessor ACPI/Non ACPI, uniprocessor/SMP, AMD/Intel and Via with no problems whatsoever
Only thing to watch is your Virus scanning software which can bork the install. I just uninstall AV to play safe and reinstall when done.

If you read the MS KB linkys at the bottom of the article in full and digest you will see why i do the above as MS recommends you use this method.

Hope this helps

Very cool Rockhard, thx. This computer that I'm going to upgrade is the mother of all installations and the thought of reinstalling everything is a nightmare and beyond...and beyond that! I just upgraded an amd soyo board to an epoxkt266 board, and now I want to replace my p3 board with the old soyo. WinXP took the new epox board very graciously without any problems - I was impressed...but intel to amd is another story. I'll give this a try. (it'll be a few weeks before I can post results.)
