want to build a system but stuck on the motherboard aspect...

i know i want an E6750 and 8800gts 640mb but what board do i pair it up with?

maybe not necessarily a specific board but what chipset would be better --- P35 or 650i?

please help. any comments/insight are welcomed. thanks.

Both will overclock fine as far as the chipset goes. The question you should ask is do you want to have the option to do SLI? The 650i/680i will do SLI and the P35 cannot.

If you want, you can also check on the for sale section of these forums and see if there's any 650i or 680i SLI boards up if you want to go that route.

Pricewise they're pretty equal.

sli is a nice option since who knows when i would be able to get the latest and greatest card on the market.

i know with the p35 board and my video card, sli is impossible so i want to go that route, i would have to get a new board or switch video cards.

to be specific, the two board i am debating is the msi p35 platinum and msi p6n platinum. love the feature set, around the same price.

performance wise... is one better than the other?

i consider myself a mild gamer and i do photo/video editing.

not sure if this is the forum to ask but how big of a performance difference if i ran SLI on the 650i versus the 680i? i know the 650i runs both slots at x8 and the 680i runs at x16.

For games side by side the playability will be the same roughly. Although when running extreme resolutions and cranking up the AA and AF the dual x16 will start to show a bigger benefit.

The biggest advantage of the 650i is its ability to run the memory bus unlinked from the FSB, giving you practically unlimited number of memory dividers.

Yes, I know, it might create problems, and many people still prefer to run the memory bus 1:1 with the FSB.

But I am happily using the 16/13 Memory/FSB ratio, and that seems to be working fine for me. The P35 choices are limited to just a few basic dividers.

That said, the P35 chipset is used successfully by many people, and seems to be more stable than 650i.

In the end, it's a matter of personal preference.

This is the exact post I was going to start, but here it is. For my next system, I will be building a Core2 Quad Q6600. I don't need SLI. I was looking at the MSI P6N SLI Platinum nForce 650i SLI Socket 775 1333MHz DDR2-800. I know it has SLI, but I don't care. I am also partial to Gigabyte mother boards. Is P35 equal to or better than 650i boards? I'm ok with ASUS as well and don't forget ABIT. I want a motherboard with heatpipe thermal cooling like the MSI P6N has. I here the P35 takes both DDR2 and DDR3 modules. Do the 650i boards support DDR3 for future upgrades?

If you could give me a couple boards that are well reviewed, that would be great. I've alread got my case (Soprano) a 550w coolermaster power supply and 4x1GB of OCZ Platinum rev2 DDR2-800 4-4-4-15 ram for the new system. I also have a ATI x1950 xt graphics card for this new system. I already have a Tuniq Tower 120 as well for cooling and arctic silver 5 thermal paste. Now I need a motherboard, hard drive and DVD burners.

My Core2 Duo 6400 goes to my dad. It has the Gigabyte 965p-DS3 motherboard which has been wonderful.

680i and 650i do not support ddr3.
