Just bought and set up my new Asus P3V4X and flashed to the 1005 bios. Fresh install of Win98 SE, the 4.22 4 in 1 drivers and 4.03 AGP. I have 128 megs of Micron PC133 cas2 ram, Coppermine 650 at 865, SB Live and a Geforce DDR video card. Everything installed without a hitch and runs perfect except my memory scores in SiSoft absolutely suck. I have the memory settings in the bios set for SPD. I am new at this so please bear with me. Can anyone give me some advice on how to improve my memory performance. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

What are your scores? I have an almost identical setup, except my board is a Soyo 7VCA. My mem scores average 340-388 CPU and 410-440 FPU, depending on Sandra's time of the month. Search the forums for reference to "wpcredit". That's a program by H.Oda that might help you out. Also, make sure your BIOS mem timings are set to "Turbo". I'm not sure if the Asus has memory interleaving in it's BIOS, but if you find it, set it to 4. Make sure your IOQ level is set to 4.

Hope that helps.

Last run about an hour ago was 278 - 297. Pretty crappy. I'll try those suggestions and thanks for your help!

When you set your memory to be set by SPD does the timings show up as 2/2/2/5 ? Also what frequency are you running the memory at? You should be running either 1/1 or AUTO (Some people seem to get better results with AUTO) Last you should definitly do the search for WPCREDIT and read about that

The SPD option is preferable because if you don't use it you'll have to enable 4-way interleaving with WPCREDIT ....

Well good luck

Here is my p3v4x exerience with memory problems:
System:
Enlight 7237 Case w/4 fans
Asus P3V4X
p3 650 cB0@866 w/GoldenOrb
128 MB Apacer RAM(Siemens)
4 gig crappy caviar IDE drive
Acer 50x CD-ROM
VisionTek Geforce SDR @125/177

I started at 650 and hadnt fooled with any memory settings yet, in the BIOS memory is to BY SPD which sets it to 3-3-3-6. My sandra results were 275/325 or so +-10. Really bad I must say.

Next I booted at 866 to see if bumping the FSB speed made any difference. I got scores of 300/350 or so again +-10. Really bad still. I then found the magical program called WPCEDIT from www.h-oda.com.

I set my memory to 7ns in the BIOS which DISABLES 4-way interelaving and booted, changed offset 64(for the first memory slot, needed to be done for 65,66,67 if you have more than 1 stick of memory)to 12 which enables 4-way with the 2-2-2-5 setting. Now check this out, got 375/450 scores in sandra, sometimes a little higher. Made a HUGE difference in gaming and 3dmark scores. I feel sorry for anyone who hasnt discovered this yet. I am still tweaking everything but I am almost there. I also have offsets 50 and 51 set to hex FF, but you can play with the program, if something messes up reboot and the old settings are restored. When you find a stable setting use the program WPCSET to load the offset and hex at bootup, and even if you mess something up you can still boot in safe mode, stop WPCSET and re-boot again. Good luck

Chris

Do you have a link for WPCEDIT and WPCSET? Does it come with instructions or is it pretty much user friendly?
Thanks everyone for you help, I'll get there after some trial and error I'm sure.

Skitzer,
I have the same memory and most of the same hardware as you. I kept BIOS 1003 and have my memory set at SPD 1/1 2,2,2,5 and my Sandra scores are: CPU 368 FPU 446. That's nothing overclocked and no WPCREDIT.
Keep checking your settings.

It works like this: you use WPCREDIT until you've got the best you can, and then note down the OFFSETs you've used and what value they are (this is written in the lower left corner of WPCREDIT when you highlight the ofset), then you choose add in WPCRSET and write the offset and value ... repeat this for every offset you've made changes to and then choose start (top left corner) reboot and you should be up and running

Just got done using both- brought my scores up, from 323/389 to 397/464!!! Took a little bit of figuring out, but was very simple in retrospect

Resinboy: Could you post exactly what changes you did in wpcredit? I will recive my stick of Mushkin High Performence Rev 2 2-2-2 any day now and i'm using the same mobo as you. Wonder if that Mushkin mem will handle my 650E @ 1007Mhz @ CAS2 ?

This is the link to the article in the Overclockers.com database that I used : http:// http://www.overclockers.com/tips105/index03.asp .
I went ahead and just used the settings they had listed for the P3V4x- I'm sure there is more room for adjustments, but I was just interested to see if I could get things to work.
Here are the original settings, and following are the tweaks that I used:
Original Settings: (these may/will vary)

50 - FD - 11111101
51 - D8 - 11011000
64 - 95 - 10010101
65 - 95 - 10010101
66 - 11 - 00010001
67 - 95 - 10010101
68 - 03 - 00000011
New Settings:
50 - FF - 11111111 (enables CPU Dram Read while snoop)
51 - FF - 11111111 (changes prefetch and p/write depth to 4)
64 - 12 - 00010010 (bank 0/1 4x interleaving enabled)
65 - 12 - 00010010 (bank 2/3 4x interleaving enabled)
66 - 12 - 00010010 (bank 4/5 4x interleaving enabled)
67 - 12 - 00010010 (bank 6/7 4x interleaving enabled)
68 - 43 - 01000011 (set bank active page control to any bank)

Apparently one of the tricks is to set the 4x interleaving even on the EMPTY ram slots( why, I have no clue).
Cool thing about the program is that if you screw up, you just reboot, and all of your original setting will be in place. Once you have things working correctly( no locks, and Sandra smiling) you run WPCRSET, fill in a couple of numbers, and then your reg tweaks load up every time you boot.
Also some advice: when initially using WPCREDIT, after you get some settings that work for you, save the settings as a REG. file, as this program is volatile i.e. you cause a BSOD or a reboot, you will lose
all of your tweaked settings. This way, you reboot, open WPCREDIT, open the saved file, and change your settings. Then, when done, run the WPCRSET program to lock in the settings permanently. My experience was that if you made a setting the system didn't like, you found out immidiately.

I managed to squeze out 367/414 in Sisoft sandra with CAS3 memory with wpcredit. No miracle tough. Scored 342/394 without wpcredit.
Waiting for CAS2 mem....

Can someone help me with this tweaking situation? These utilities
have no manual whatsoever and I am not a programmer to find out
how to set these things to optimize my board. Got an P3V4X, P3 800
100 FSB and 256MB DIMM non-ECC PC100. Sisoft Sandra gave me a report
of 266/325, even lower than their P3 500 benchmark. Please help.
Thanks in advance.

sure, Obelix, you just have to send me that P3800 so I can set it up in my board, and "test it" here just kidding!
Go to http://www.overclockers.com, scroll about a 1/3 of the way down to an article dated 6/21/00 called WPCREDIT. This article gives you a walkthrough of how to set up the registers, and then get them to load on boot-up. Follow the instructions EXACTLY, and you won't get hurt. You have the option to try things on your own, or go with the pre- set values that worked for the guy writing the article. I chose the latter, and it worked well for me. If you get stuck, e-mail me @rocket@nycap.rr.com .

Hi Resinboy. Thanks for the tip but unfortunately, the setup listed on the site caused my system to hang when I set the offset #64 to 12. What are my option for this offset beside 12? I understand the setting varies from board to board but I will need the option to experiment. Can anyone help? Thank you.

it's interesting that you had a problem with #64: when i did it the 1st time, 64 set my system right into a reboot. Try setting 64 first, then do the rest;this worked for me the 2nd time.

I can't get it to work properly in Win2K...

I just installed my P3V4X w/ latest 4-in-1's (1005 bios came loaded) and have 512MB PC100 infineon. The memory scores are less than the P3 500, lol !
I can get WPcredit to open but when I change 64 from 11 to 12 it reboots the damn PC everytime. I have tried doing 64 first, after I click a few others, and last...doesn't matter. I tried pulling all dimms but one and no change. I changed the mem timings and settings in BIOS, no change.

Help ! :|

Hi everyone. I finally was able to change the setting and found out the following thing: it only works with 1 128MB DIMM PC133, nothing else. I have another 256MB SDRAM PC100 which hangs my system whenever I set offset #64 to 12. What will happen when I add another stock of
128MB PC133 DIMM? What offset will need to be change and with what
value? Please advise. Thanks.

OOOOOOOOOOPS!!!

*BEFORE* you fiddle with offset #64 make sure of what timings your is working at!!!!!!!!! This can not be stressed enough... if your ram isn't run at cas2 (2-2-2-5) then changing offset #64 to 12 will crash your computer everytime because some of the timings are adjusted there... If you're just trying to enable 4-way interleaving you should just change the last two bits to xxxxxx10... although my computer crashed when I did this as well... some of the timings like the 5/6 can be changed but not the cas latency... this is set in the bios and if you change it *BSOD*

Hope that wasn't too cryptic...

Good luck

Obelix: I am currently running w/2 sticks pc133 ram: you must set all 4 of the registers, even if you only have ram in 2 slots. You must have had a conflict between either the 2 brands, or more likely, 2 speeds of ram.
