Just curious... which one is doing better right now in performance and user satisfaction? I have a P3V4X.. no probs so far. I am jsut curioius to hear what others have to say, as I will probably be building a system for a friend of mine soon

Both are stable motherboards.

P3V4X:
4 dimm slots
6 PCI slots
ATA/66

CUSL2
3 dimm slots
6 PCI slots
ATA/100
onboard audio?

I would rather buy an Asus CUSL2, the ATA/100 feature is something that you might not want to miss.

ATA/100 is garbage LOL. Current hard drive barely max out ata/33, ata/66 isnt close to being fully utilized.

I hafta agree with Doomguy here, dont base your decision on ATA100.
I dont think you'll go wrong with either one, but you could allways check out Anand's reviews of them.

Hehe... was not even considering the drive configuration. If everything else was the same as far as features, which is easier to setup, has more stability, etc etc...

Anand rated the CUSL2 better than the P3V4X. Its bench scores are better too, but only marginally. I can sacrifice a little performance for stability. Is the CUSL2 going to be stable enuf? i will not overclock, but I will be throwing a 133bus P3 800 in it with a Geforce2 64MB

The CUSL2 is rock solid for me, plus I like the 5 USB ports it comes with. Also, if you're like me, you'll appreciate the built-in video since I'm a very rapid Video card upgrader. It's nice back-up when you're current card is being sent out and you're awaiting the replacement hehe. By the way- running a 600E at 800 (133mhz bus).

The bad thing about the CUSL2 is the cold-boot problem. It doesn't adjust the CPU voltage until after the POST. So, if your CPU needs 1.80 instead of 1.65 to boot, you're hooped. Keep this in mind.

For more info, go to www.cusl2.com

I didnt know it had on-board video... Anand's didnt, maybe its an "option."

No overclocking here.... do the higher speed P3's need different voltages? I know there is a difference someplace, just don't know where..

Actually, all 815/815e mboards have onboard video (which can be disabled in the BIOS). It's built into Intel's GMCH (graphics memory controller hub, i.e. the system controller).

Regarding voltage, I know that the slot P3 Coppermines run at 1.65 volts except for the 1GHz, which I believe runs at 1.75 volts (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I'm not completely sure about socket P3s. It's either 1.6 or 1.65 volts for a P3 to 933Mhz, with the 1Ghz socket probably at 1.75.

I agree with Han888 the P3V4X (had one loved it) is a great board but the CUSL2 is better even with its minor problems (remember all boards have some problems just look at various post on them) Some people may not have any problems others are plagued but for my .02 the CUSL2 has been a godsend

Have CUSL2. P3-700@938 (cB0), 1.80v. bios 3 beta 3, 2x128 PC133. Posted lessons learned here.

Asus is still working out kinks, but nice board. Not familiar w/ the other.

i have p3v4x. it is a fine board, but now made obsolite by the cuv4x which is the same but has the newer super south bridge instead of the old mobile one.

anyway, why hasnt anyine mensioned that the intel chip has much better memory performance that the via? i815e is as fast as the bx, and that is much faster that apollo pro 133a

i would go for the cusl2 over my p3v4x any time. just be careful: intel's 133mhz memory standard isnt exacly the same as via's 133mhz memory standard, so i815 sometimes does not recognize the dimms as 133mhz compatible. check it.

I would make a different approach, I'd scratch that CUSL2 and put in the MSI 815E Pro instead. As for performance, i815E will always have some kind of edge over the VIA 133A.

wolf550e: The CUV4X doesnt have super southbridge, and it's never over taken P3V4X because it's slower. The only VIA 133A board featuring it right now is the AOpen AX34ProII, rumored to be the P3V4X sucessor, but I doubt it. All super southbridge offers is the ATA100, which is generally agreed to be useless.

I didn't know that the Asus Cusl2 had onboard video.

I have an intel rc 440bx motherboard which came with onboard video. It is a NVIDIA RIVA 128 which isn't that bad after all. I can play Quake 3 Arena and NFS5 with no problems

How about the onboard video of the Asus CUSL2?

Duckers: All i815 motherboard has onboard(technically on chip) graphics, the Intel i752 graphics are integrated into the northbridge of the i815 chipset, it can be disabled, and you can use the AGP slot too. As for Riva128, I think the Intel graphics will be faster.

If you are not overclocking get the CUSL2.
If you are overclocking and know your CPU can handle 100FSB(Celron) & 133FSB (P3) then get the CUSL2.

If you are overclocking and dont know what your CPU is capable of then the P3V4X may be a better choice (unless you have a 133FSB CPU)

This is because CUSL2 have auto set the PCI & AGP dividers at the most idiotic FSB levels making many FSB setting unstable. eg 1/4 PCI starts at 133Mhz instead of 124Mhz. 1/3 PCI starts at 100Mhz instead of 90Mhz.

Shazam: Incorrect, the i752 technically has no RAM at all, it shares the RAM with the system RAM and can be set from 4 megs to 11 megs.

Hmm, on the CUSL2, there are no BIOS options to change the amount of memory the 752 uses.

CAMS, I don't think the BIOS is correct. I'm running at 124 mhz bus speed, which the BIOS says is a ball-busting 41 mhz for the PCI bus, but everything's working happy dandy.

Its not in the BIOS, its somewhere else, I have seen this done with the i810 on chip graphics, I know the i815 can do it as well. But if can't set it, its most likely at 8megs.

The divider has to be somewhere, 124 Mhz would be sensible, did you try SiSoft 2000 to see what mainboard information reports for PCI speed & divider?
