P4@1.4ghz

i'm building a system for my brother. he will be using it mainly for browsing,e-mails and maybe some gaming.so far i've got a GF3,case+psu,40gb hdd & 32x cdrw (fans and fdd included). as for the cpu i have
a spare P4 1.4ghz/256/400 and a beat up FIC VC11(dont even know if its operational).now heres my question,if the mobo is does not work,would it be wise to keep the 1.4 and get another mobo for it or just go with one of thos Fry's deals like a 2200+ & mobo for $49?

depends on whether or not the 1.4 is socket 423 or 478. if 478 then u can pick up a cheap 478 mobo no problems. i can't remember, but isn't the first 478 P4 was a 1.5ghz, if it's a 423 CPU then you may need to track down a old MB or sell it and get that fry's deal.

I'd scrap the 1.5 P4 because I think it's a 423, in which case you can't really find a board easily for it. get the Fry's deal and sell the P4 on eBay or something the 2200 will perform better anyways

its actually a 478 just like this one.also it used to be on a fic vc11 which is a socket 478 mobo.i am really trying to stay away from the cheapo fry's deals since i'd like this system to atleast have some room for future upgrades. any other suggestions?

the P4 1.4 will be reeeeaaaaally slow. But its alright if you just gonna do some webbrowsing and stuff on it.

the 1.4 is only gonna be temporary,atleast until he starts earning his own dough,then he can get better proc
if he wishes to.i understand that the p4 is getting old but a jump to a 2.4 or maybe 2.8 is still a big upgrade.
P4P800-E Deluxe sounds good but still open to suggestions.

P4 1.4ghz is fine for browsing.....email...etc. As long as it works then I think you shouldn't dish out extra cash for a different platform.

Get a current socket-478 MoBo, and a pair of DDR memory sticks to match. That way, he can upgrade to a 3.0 with dual-channel and HT without doing another thing to the system. I have a Asus P4P800 Deluxe, and I recently built a system for my mom using a P4P800-SE. After a terrible experience with a flaky Abit IS7, I swear by Asus now.

EDIT: This assumes that the current MoBo is found to be non-functional. If it works, and you don't want to spend the money to upgrade it, don't.

If you overclock that P4 a little and add more RAM, you'll be able to play Doom3

i will definitely try it with the current mobo and see how it goes.if it works,then too bad for him he's gonna have to suck it up and wait til he can afford to upgrade lol.....thanks to all
