Hi! I intend to do some slight overclocking, so which is a better combination in view of both stability and performance?

P4 1.60A and Epox EP-4SDA+

or

Athlon XP 1900+ and Abit NV7-133R

Thanks!

I have the 4sda+, and I would go for the asus p4s533, and get a separate raid card if you really need it. The 4sda+ lacks the 12 volt 4 pin connector that Intel recommends for stability. Can't comment on the abit nv7-133r.

Is there any significant difference between the 645 (4SDA+) and 645dx (P4S533) considering I'm using PC2100 DDR?

I would recommend the P4 1.6A setup. My question to you is this: do you already own DDR SDRAM? If not, do not buy that board, but instead purchase either an ABIT TH7II or an ASUS P4T-E.

Thanks for all the responses!

Athlon4all: If I were to overclock the 1900+ (1.6GHz) to 2000+ (12x139) or even 2100+ (12x146) on the NV7-133R, will the P4 1.6A at 2.1 (533fsb) still have a performance advantage?

Yield: Any reasons for your choice?

Daovonnaex: Yes, I already own 2 sticks of Crucial 256MB PC2100 DDR.

oldfart: Why 4BDA2+ instead of 4SDA+? Anything differences in the stability and performance between i845D and SiS645? I've seen rave reviews about both boards though... I've actually considered the MSI 845 Ultra-ARU as well. Is the MSI board a worthy contender?

The Abit NV7-133R looks like a great board if you plan on running your system w/o overclocking (I intend to buy one), but I'm thinking its not gonna be a great overclocking board. It has some limited overclocking options, and IIRC, most of the OC settings have to be set with jumpers. For overclocking, I'd recommend a good VIA KT333 board (more expensive, but slightly better features) or an older, but still strong KT266A board. From the benchmarks I've read, an Athlon running at 2000+ or 2100+ will probably outperform a P4 running at 2.1GHz.

A P4 1.6@2.1 will beat a XP1900+

Now what is the punch line cause that is a joke

Looks like the P4a isn't the best bet. Here is one of the recent reviews done that can demonstrate the XP 1800+ beating a P4a 2.0. Link

Unless you're able to O/C that P4a to at least 2.4 or better, you're not gonna beat an O/C'ed XP chip.

What you fail to realize is when you OC a 1.6a to 2133 you are running at 133mhz bus & that's why it's faster than a 1800+ easy.

Most 1.6a's will do 2.3ghz+ so that leaves the 1800+ far behind,And since the summer is coming & you dont need a space heater anymore you should get the 1.6A.

I have a P4 1.6A at 2400Mhz right now, will be going higher once I get a better PSU. I recommend the following gear, and I also recommend you take a look at the CPU forum here at Anandtech and look at the big threads about 1.6A overclocking...

Intel Pentium 4 1.6A
ASUS P4B266-C
512MB stick of Samsung PC2700 DDR
At least an Antec TruePower PSU (at the very least the 330 model), but if it's not that exact brand, I don't recommend anything below about 500 watts if you want to overclock to the max. I think it's oldfart that has the TruePower 330 and he's at 2.4Ghz with his 1.6A. I have an Antec "normal" 300watt PSU and it's at its knees at 2.4Ghz--I'm ordering a 520watt PSU as soon as I have the cash.

Enjoy!

Budman: Notice I said an OC'ed XP chip, not a stock 1800+. I am making the presumption that you would be OC'ing both chips and that the 1800+ could be OC'ed to at least 1.73Ghz with some decent cooling. Would that P4A running at 2.1 beat out an XP 2100+?

Some things to think about, I know all systems are diff but just something to think about

Asus P4S533

512 Corsair PC-2700 DDR

PNY GeForce 3

Set at 533 front side bus puts it at 2.133, I ran 3DMark on it and it was 6800 with memry set to auto, I played with the memory settings and clocked it higher but that was the best score I got, I ran a old Epox 8KHA+ XP1700 with the same parts and it was right at 10,000, Ran a Dragon+ XP1900 same parts 11,690, It is a stable computer so far but with it running so slow I am going to have to eat the cost of this one, Like I said just something to think about, If more people would have showed me the scores I would have told the guy I didn't want to build the computer, Now I have a top of the line P4S533 for sale

You need to set you ram to 3:4 NOT AUTO, but using 3:4 your ram will run at 166mhz.

Did you install the SIS agp driver?

Nighthawk,
What kind of settings are you using to get 2.4. Voltages, memory etc. I've got the P4B266-PA and 1.7, crucial pc2100 and the best I've been able to get is 1.9. At 2g it starts to get unstable. This is my first intel. My Epox with XP1600 is faster than the P4. What do the settings 1:1 and 3:4 mean in the bios? Right now I've only got a 300w p/s, but I have a 400w in my other computer I could swap out.
Thanks for any info, JF

I have the SIS AGP drivers installed, Did get the score up to 9400 so that is better but a long ways from what I thought it would be, Changed the memory to 4:5, Won't boot at 5:5 but didn't change the score any, Auto-9400, 4:5-9400, So I would guess auto is 4:5, Like I said the computer has run stable since I built it, I can't think of anything else to try, Like I said just left everything set the way the board came, Jumpers that is, I just haven't worked on the P4's in so long I still am wondering if I messed something, Thanks most people just try and start a war not try and help set the board up

Ok i've had a P4 1.6a@2.4 150FSB DDR at 200/400 on a Epox 4BDA and I have a XP1700+ @ 1.66 Gig for XP 2000+ speeds. The 2.4 barely beats out a XP2000+ it can't encode mp3's as fast as the XP@1.66 gig. It can't encode DivX as fast as my XP@1.66... Sure it plays Quake like a SOB but when your dealing with 140+ FPS at 1024x768 with eye candy maxed out a 5 FPS decrease on the Athlon system is not noticable. Everything i do my XP walks all over the P4 at 2.4 Gig... From what i've seen and tested it take a Minimum of 600Mhz more with the p4's to even attemp to equal an XP in performance. I sold the P4 and put my XP back in. It was dissapointing to me to see a chip thats that much slower clock wise smoke the fast chips ass!

Well if I keep the Asus P4S533 it will be my backup computer since a guy that wanted to see the P4S533 run took my Epox that I was using as a backup, The P4S533 does have a lot going for it, It runs very stable and at 2.133 it runs at 39C with stock heatsink, My main computer is still a Dragon+ XP1900 with a Swiftech heatsink running at 135 FSB
