P4 1.6a. How fast can it be pushed out of the box?

>With no RAM burn (Samsung True 512mb PC2700), no CPU burn (if there is such thing), straight out of a box, new board, new cpu, how fast are you able to push this CPU without it frying? I've heard 2.1-2.4ghz right out of the box with a stock HSF. I'm going to be running this thing on a Thermalright AX478 (AX7 model for socket 478) with a Vantec Tornado (84.1CFM goodness). Parts are starting to arrive and I can't wait to slap on the AS3 and overclock this baby on my ASUStek P4B533-V motherboard. I'm planning to hit at least 2.0ghz right out of the box, just to make sure I got a good deal on this processor.

>One more thing. Can someone e-mail me or post a detailed, step-by-step explination of what the 3:4 trick is on this board? I'm probably going to stay SPD or 1:1 as to not kill my RAM but I want to know for future references.

Thanks all you Anandtechies.

Right out of the box you should be able to do 2.1. I ran mine at 1.6 for maybe an hour while I loaded my drivers then it was up to 2.1. I set my ram at 3:4

i was able to get to 166fsb on my 1st day. on the 2nd day i went to 170, 175, and 180fsb.
the performance curve drops off hard past 167fsb, so i settled there.

There are many of us that believe that no "burn in" is (ever) necessary for a CPU. That is will do its maximum performance immediately if all other variables are right.

There has been many a discussion on this in day of yore here. Do a search of the archives if you don't believe me.

i agree with that.

ive had my 1.6A for 2 months now - it doesnt overclock any better now as it did new.
however i do think that memory and motherboards do require a bit of a "breakin" period.
nothing harsh, just typical use for a couple days til it gets "settled".

I dont know about a burn in but you might want to take a few minutes to make sure the heatsink is mounted right and check the temps before/during/after overclocking.
BTW, Mine went to 2.1 the 1st day and to its max 2.35 the next day.
good luck

sorry LogisticalBovine i forgot your other question...

you dont need to hack for 3:4 ratio - it already has a 4:5 ratio.
a 4:5 ratio is actually better for ppl that could run 160fsb 400DDR.

Mine ran 1.6@2.4 too at default 1.5v...wasn't prime stable until 1.55v....I ran it up to 2.46 first day and win98 FE limited me (still does)...slap in winxp and I went to 2.66ghz (167fsb) with 1.66v actual...Will post and load into windows and run a few benchmarks at 2.88ghz (180fsb) w/ 1.79v actual....so I guess for most that is probably calling it stable... However I haven't prime tested and likely wont until I am about ready to get a new one....

I have left it at 2.66ghz for reasons my mentor Thugs states as well as I don't like the heat and the voltage for myself personally....

I would love to get a hand on a 4:5 ratio board so I can run 400+ mhz ddr out of kingmax that did it on my asus p4s333 mobo....
