Thanks everyone. I reckon he's got PC600 (went in the BIOS and it didn't say anything). My computer at home has all that Norton's crap (his doesn't) and was setup similar to his and it feels much snappier. And I upgraded his drivers yesterday to no avail. I might be exagerating a bit about the sluggishness. But it's certainly "slower" than my P3 960 - or it at least feels that way.

Does anyone know for a fact that Dell uses PC600? Because the other guy I was talking about is disappointed with his performance and he's not very technical at all. If someone like that can see a performance issue, maybe Dell's cutting corners here and there resulting in performance hits.

Either way (PC600 or PC800), I still tend to believe it's a software issue and not a hardware issue.

My brother's Dell Dimension 8100 1.7Ghz P4 feels just as fast, if not faster (in some things), than my 1.4Ghz Athlon.

And are you sure about the PC600 being standard? Because I know for a fact that my brother's computer came with PC800; and if you go to price a new system from them right now, the only memory they sell for a 1.7GHz P4 is PC800.

I setup a compaq workstation with a 1.5 P4. It was FAST. I had a T-bird 1.3 system and the P4 felt faster.

I won't even mention that the system still has not locked up, performed an illegal op, or even acted wierd - not like a Athlon system. But anyway, I didn't mention any of that...

I too thought that the 1.7's came with PC800. I know some of the cheaper models can come with PC600.

I agree. All speed issues aside (I'm sure it's a Dell issue), I'm impressed with the i850. I hope they drop the prices on P4s. I think I'll definitely get a Northwood.

I never said that Dell uses Pc600 dram in all their P4 systems. I believe that the 1.7 P4 offering from Dell is fairly new and recent addition to there line of the 8100 series and I was not aware of the 1.7 offering untill now. Sorry for the misinformation.

GL, re-install windows yourself, use tweakui/x-setup to tweak the UI and system, install the latest drivers and check bios settings, as mentioned before its probably some software issue, i have used many Dell machines before, and they were all fast for thier class.

I've got a Dell P4 1.7 GHz, and I asked for PC800 and they gave it to me. It runs perfectly -- everything's basically instantaneous. And it's more stable than any linux/unix machine I've ever used.

and your comparing hardware stability to OS stability for what reason...? May I ask as to which OS you are running?

Unless you run benchmarks you can't just sit down at a computer and attempt to gauge it's performance. Windows has so many tweakable settings that have an impact on how fast or slow a computer "feels". For example there is a 1GHz IBM IntelliStation at my work with 1GB of RAM and an all-SCSI IBM drive subsystem... it feels helluva slower than my rig at home. Obviously, misconfiguration and OS bloat.

Nope, PC600 is still there for cheaper options. I had to specify PC800 when I ordered my Uncle's Dell 8100 a month ago.

Most OEM systems tend to be on the slow side anyway since they're loaded with junk and compatible/stable parts rather than fast parts.

The first thing I would do is a clean install of Windows and then tweak the system.

I wouldn't. Since it's not his.. but his friend's. If you mess it up, you are to be blamed for. And.. there is also warranty issue..

AMD AND VIA RULES, INTEL AND DELL SUCKS BALLS. id rather spend money build my own oem PC, after all we all use the best components.

do dell make their own motherboard or uses ASUS or something like that, i really hate integrated PCs coz you cant upgrade. And if one component goes wrong then your Fcked.

IU can't see Dell using pc 600 as they try to top all others in benchmarks in the Computer Magazines. Besides it says pc800 on their sight.
It's probably the Anti virus software in the background causing a lag.

Other than my colour scheme, I run a fairly default config on my computer at home. Likewise on this guy's computer. I run Norton Systemworks 2k1. He just has NAV 2k1. I have an AIW Radeon. He has a Radeon DDR. I have a SBLive Value. So does he.

The only piece of software that I can think of that he has that I don't, is Adaptec DirectCD. Knowing Adaptec software, it's probably a hunk a junk. I was alarmed to see about 7 different SCSI adapters installed with his system. Anyone else with a Dell 8100 and CD burner notice this? I really didn't want to mess anything up.

I won't do a re-install. It's fine. This guy has a lot of important and expensive stuff on his computer. Reliability is priority #1. It's certainly faster than the PII400 he had.

Other than the Adaptec DirectCD software, the only thing it could be is a difference in drivers with respect to his SBlive, or the different motherboard platform. But, now having remember he has DirectCD on his system, I suspect it is this, as the i850 should run circles around my Via 694z.
