Hi all...

I'm sorry to ask this question as I guess it's been asked over and over before.. I used the search function but I couldn't find anything really helpful.

I'm running a P4 2.6C with the retail HS and Corsair DDR400 CL2 Rams, 2 Maxtor 7200rpm disks, a CDRW and a DVD drive in a Chieftec Dragon Midi Tower. There's a fan in the side panel blowing air into the case and the PSU (Enermax) is sucking air from below it and blowing it out the back of the CPU. The MoBo is an MSI 865PE Neo2-FIS2R.
At idle I get temps around 48/40/46°C (CPU, System, Northbridge). At full load I've seen the CPU hit more than 70°C... Isn't that way too high? Would adding a Papst 80mm fan blowing air from the front into the case and another sucking it at the back change much?

TIA!!

First off switch that side panel fan to exhaust it is fightinfg with the rest of your fans. What are your other fans? Front? Back?

Well, till now I got now other fans... I just put the side panel fan to the front, now it's sucking air from the front and blowing it past the HDDs towards the CPU. I guess I need at least to add a fan in the back, blowing the hot air from the CPU out? Right now my idle temps are 45/34/51 (CPU/Sys/NB)...

@dbwillis: how many fans and where are you running?

:-( After about an hour of working (no CPU intensive tasks though - renaming files and stuff), the temps rised to 51/38/51...

Are you having any stability issues or freeze ups??? I say that cause some mobos have some real temp reporting errors.....

Waht program are you using??? Some programs very in temp readings for some unknown reason....speedfan gives the most accurate appearing temps for me on my albatron mobo....

speedfan has me at 41c/36c cpu/north 2.4@3.24ghz (1.6v)...I have 2 fans an an alpha 8942 with 80mm ystech fan...
By the way sandra gives me some funky numbers, and MBM is about 10c lower then what speedfan says....

remember you are using a stock fan. At stock 2.4ghz I run at 36c/33c, but the alpha hsf w/ ystech fan is nice....

The temps at idle in the mid 40's would sound about right, the northbridge temps seem way too high though, and 70c under load should throw the p4 into thermal throttling. That is where the chip speedsteps down to a lower speed to protect itself from buring up. The cpu should feel less responsive and lethargic for what you are use to. Does this happen???

i have an antec slk3700amb case with a 120mm in teh front and in the back.

My P42.8C idles at ~40C and climbs up to ~60C running an intensive app like a game (UT2003, Aquamark3). Case temp is ~38C.

However, I've been reading these forums and some people seem to be able to keep the temps between ~38C and ~45C. How does one keep the temperature differential so low? That would be great since wider fluctuations in temp, not to mention high temps, decrease CPU life, AFAIK.
