Just got back for Fry's in Fountain Vally.

The $199.99 combo in the Friday ad comes with a Retail P4 3.0c and an ECS 848P-A motherboard

This combo was cheaper than any Retail 3.0c chip on pricewatch.

I got a SL6WU 30 Cap CPU with a Pack date of 6/17/04

(Hopefully I'll get 3.5 Ghz+ in my current EPOX board)

Good deal. Just installed the ECS 848P-A and 3.0A. Initial Overclock 3.3 so far. Will bump it after some tests.

It's the capacitors on underside of the CPU, in the middle area surrounded by the pins. In general the 30 cap cpus overclock better than the lower cap models.

Last P4 3.0GHz $199 Fry's combo deal in my area was the same motherboard, but a Prescott 'E' chip. I asked if I could substitute a 'C' Northwood and they refused. I have the local ad for this weekend and it has the combo deal, but it doesn't specify a Northwood chip.

Do you think they're selling different chips in different stores?

Just started testing

At default voltage, stock heatsink (and pad for now) I got it up to 3.75 Ghz before it started to hang on booting from a floppy. This might be do to my pc3000 memory since it was running at Pc3200 speeds.

Currently running prime @ 3.5 Ghz @ 1.550 volts

Not bad for a start.....

I checked & this deal was only the Northwood chip.

Cool, thanks. I guess they alternate the chips they use in their P4 combo deals.

ECS mobo's are just fine for most people. The ECS nforce2 that came with my 2500+ has been rock stable at 3200+. It would be nice if they did the intel combo with an intel based board though.

Fry's has 15 days refund policy for CPU, but 30 days for motherboard. You might or might not get refund, depends on who you talk to.

the 848p IS an intel based board...albeit a crippled one.

What a crock. Both Fry's in San Diego and San Marcos have ZERO of the CPUs in stock.
No rainchecks
No substitutes.

The kicker is that one of the salesguys whispered to me that they NEVER had them in stock, not even at store open, and they won't get any in for the duration of the sale. They have other P4 chips and the ECS motherboard that they will sell at full price.

How the hell can they get away with that? Isn't that the textbook definition of Bait & Switch advertising fraud?

Decided to leave my 3.0c CPU from this deal @ 3.4 Ghz on my Epox 4PDA2+
Running with default voltage & passing every stress test I throw at it.

I'll use the ECS board to upgrade my daughters system. Maybe just throw a $60 2.4 Ghz celeron in it. Should be fast enough for a 3 year old

Update: Now running @ 3.52 Ghz (235 bus) @ stock voltage, stock heatsink w/pad

I bought this Proc with the MSI PT880 neo LSR mobo. Very disappointed with the mobo. After install board POSTs well but nothing happens after that. Changed memory, power etc. Nothing get it going. Returned that combo to Frys. I have user ESC boards before they are good decent boards. But I like MSIs much better for their advanced bios. Hope they will have a different combo deal soon!

Actually suprised with the ECS 848P-A motherboard. Pretty good board even though there's no voltage adjustment, just the FSB.

I installed a P4 1.6A CPU that would only overclock to 2.0 Ghz in my old Epox 4SDA+ and it's now running Prime 95 at 2.2 Ghz, default voltage. Board is rock solid stable in XP & Prime 95. at 2.2 Ghz.

why not take the thermal pad off and apply some thermal paste like AS5?
