P4 3.0G retail hs/fan smartfan?

I am putting together a P4 3.0G 800fsb HT retail processor with the standard heatsink/fan. The board that I am using is an MSI PT880 (sis chipset) motherboard. I have noticed that the cpu temps run about 40-48C. That might be okay but when it gets hot the fan for the heatsink spins at about 4000+ rpm. Of course this makes a lot of noise. I noticed that there appears to be a sensor on the fan (smartfan?). I was not aware that the the retail heatsink/fan had a sensor on it. Could this increase in fan speed be coming from the motherboard instead? I have built systems before with Intel processors and have noticed that they are always quieter that AMD's. This system is one of the loudest I have ever built. Does anyone else notice this with this processor/motherboard?

Many people are complaining about Intel's newer heatsinks being really loud. A popular replacement would be a Zalman CPNS7000A-AlCu.

The heatsink that Intel uses for the P4 3.0 and up is much noisier than their earlier, all aluminum P4 heatsinks. It is thermally controlled too, and I think it's ramp-up point is 41-42°C so that's why you're seeing that.

MDE's suggestion of a Zalman 7000AlCu replacement was right on the money.

That suggestion was from pure regurgitated info from reading the other P4 cooling threads (I've never touched the guts of a P4 system). Shows how much of a learning tool the forums can be :beer:.

My retail Intel 3.06 is very loud, I think I'm getting the Zalman tomorrow, it's on sale fore $29 down the street. I only have three fans in the system, the CPU, Video card and PS. The PS is a quite one, the fan isn't spinning much and the GPU is small. I assume most of the noise is from the CPU which is a huge fan.

I removed the stock thermal substance on the heatsink and applied Artic Silver with no better results. When I close the side panel the fan really spins up (44-48C). I am using a standard midtower case w/one exhaust and one intake fan so airflow is decent. I myself run an Athlon with 3 intake and 2 exhaust fans and it is still quieter than this system. I believe I may have to do as Monkey suggested and purchase an aftermarket heatsink/fan.

A cheaper solution would be to get a zalman "fan mate 1" for $5-7. I run my p4 at 2500 rpms, and the temps range from 38-51 celcius with the copper heatsink fan. I cut the rpms by 33%, and the temperature rose only 2-3 degrees.

From the reviews I found, it sounds like the Zalman 7000 is super quite and runs the chip cooler. I'm definatly getting one ASAP. My damn computer sounds like a jet taking off and it doesn't need to. I don't overclock.

If you get a Zalman 7000 series, get the AlCu version, it's cheaper, lighter, and performs the same as the all copper version or better.
