How the hell do I explain to this idiot that the 6800 GT is hell of a lot faster than a 7300 LE? All he can grasp is that 7300 is a higher number than 6800, both cards are nvidia, and they both have 256 MB ram.

The 6800 GT was the highest option for video cards when I bought my computer. The 7300 LE is the lowest option.

I have to wait and talk to customer care tomorrow.

My p4 3.2 Ghz, 2 GB ram and 6800 GT got a 4.3 windows experience score. this new 1.86 Ghz e6300, 1 GB (soon to be 2 GB) and a 7300 LE gets a 3.2.
Tell the moron that ok, if two 256MB cards are the same, then you want an equivalent CPU to your old 3.2GHz P4 -- you want a 3.2 GHz Core 2 Duo. See what he says.

No, seriously, you could look up the specs of the 6800GT GPU and the specs of the 7300LE. The number of shaders, pipelines, clockspeed, memory speed, etc. The 6800GT numbers will blow the 7300LE numbers away. Make him speechless by rattling off lists of specs that he'll never understand. Then tell him it's like a 2002 Ferrari racing against a 2007 Daihatsu. Maybe he'll get it. Or maybe you'll be lucky and he'll transfer you to his manager.

haha, that's a good one. I may just use the 3.2 Ghz vs. 1.86 Ghz thing

I'm collecting stats now and I won't be speaking to the same gentleman. That guy was in hardware warranty support, the next people will be in customer care and they supposedly can help me.

I'm trying to find one that lists both but haven't yet. The nVidia site basicaly just explains the whole 7300 series and doesn't go into too much detail about the single card.

thanks!

that doesn't list the 7300 LE specifically but I can at least compare the 6800 GT to the 7300 GT which it is still faster than..

Looks like the 7300 LE is 64 bit (maybe 128) and the 6800 GT is a 256 bit card also.

Ok guys thanks for your help. I have won.

They are going to send me a new video card, but they are saying it will take 5-10 business days to get here. No big deal as long as they send it.

What are they sending you? Is it the 6800GT or better? Spill the beans

Hooray, by the way. You stuck to your guns and didn't let them shaft you for less like most idiot consumers will.

she's still filling out the order. It better not be the radeon x1300 pro....

It should be either the 8600 GTS or the 8800 GTX according to the cards available on their site for the xps 410...

I'll let you know when I find out

Don't settle for it. Tell her you want "equivalent or better than" the model that they are replacing. Do not settle for less than you originally paid for. If they're replacing it because it broke then it's their fault and you shouldn't have to pay for it. The X1300pro is inferior to the 6800GT.

A couple of cards that I'd accept if I were you, should they suggest it, would be the x1600 pro or the 7600GS.

Well the only cards they show available for the XPS 410/9200 are:

256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro
256MB nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS
768MB nVidia GeForce 8800 GTX

the 6800 GT has DUAL DVI connectors, the x1300/7300 LE don't even have that.

is the 8600 GTS comparable to the 6800 gt?

I'm sending them an email with all the specs in fine print and bolded so they can understand it.

Tell them you want the 8600GTS "because they're both 256MB and they're both nVidia"

By the way, yes, the 8600GTS would blow the 6800GT away.

Ok that is what i asked for in the email. Thanks for your help. I'll give them some time to read the long email I sent them with all the detailed specs, most of which were from their own website.

I also included links to a REFURBISHED 6800 GT they are selling for $439. Also links to the X1300 pro and 7300 LE which are priced $150 and $76 respectively.

The person on the phone said the x1300 pro is the "best" they could do, however I'm going to see how this email does. they usually call me back after sending one

the funny thing is, the woman on the phone told me the x1300 pro has dual DVI, it does NOT. Both the 7300 LE and X1300 pro support dual display, but they have 1 DVI and 1 VGA connector.

They should give you a card that is the equivalent or better than your 6800GT. If those are the only three cards offered, then the 8600GTS is the lowest card that is equivalent or better than the 6800GT. I'd stick it to them until they gave you that card or broadened their list beyond three cards.

On that note, I think they say that because it has one DVI connector and they include a VGA->DVI adaptor for the other one? And a DVI->VGA adaptor to run two VGA monitors (I know that much).

you got a sweet deal. a E6300 is much faster then your old 3.2Ghz P4. it's also dual core and generates less heat. enjoy!

Yeah I'm loving it so far! the only problem is my extra 2x512 DIMM's of memory don't arrive until tomorrow

it runs Ok on 1 GB, but 2 GB will definitely help a lot. I just am kind of regretting now ordering 2x512 GB modules instead of 2x1 GB for a total of 3 GB...

Hopefully 2 GB will satisfy me I can definitely tell a difference in the speed of doing more things at once.. it's very nice!

Well it looks like they sent me the x1300 pro regardless of what I said before.

It bumped up my Vista experience from 3.2 to 4.3. I'm still working with them trying to resolve this. From what I've read these cards suck for any kind of gaming.

More legwork on your part, but sell the 6300 cpu & x1300gpu on eBay & buy an e4300 & whatever card you can afford.

Or just keep pestering them for an upgrade. You're still not getting a card comparable to the 6800gt, but you made out like a bandit on the cpu itself.

that's kind of why i'm debating whether to give up on the video card. This machine will last me much longer now than my old one and keeps me from having to upgrade for at least a year or two longer.

You could eBay it and buy a better card. I saw quite a few go for over $60 and some go for over $70. This was for the PCI-express cards. If you could even get $50 for it, you could put in some extra money and get a 7900GS or X1950 Pro or something like that.

sounds like a plan to me. They gave you a sweet upgrade on the CPU, I'd just take it and run, so to speak.

Yup, ebay the X1300 or flog it to a kind but dumb friend, and add a little of your own money and get a 7800GS (or GT, or 7900GS or x1950 Pro depending on how much you want to put into it).

Well guys thanks for your help. it looks like I may have won

Just talk to someone at Dell and they are now sending me an nVidia GeForce 7900 GS.

According to the Tom's hardware site, it is almost 2x as fast as the 6800 GT...

persistence paid off this time around..

Wow! That's awesome! Next time you get the upgrade bug, just start having "problems", and it looks like Dell will give you a free 100% performance boost!

It's funny because when all this started, I really didn't even want a new computer, and that's what I got. If I had been trying to get a new computer throughout this it would probably not have happened.
I guess it was more expensive in the long run to keep sending incompetent tech's out + replacement parts.
My 4 year warranty has definitely paid off... $200 well spent.
