P4 @ 800mhz vs. Athlon @ 400mhz

I?m designing a new system for high-end gaming, and my first decision needs to be in regards to a processor. Currently, Pentium?s top processor is running on an 800mhz FSB, whereas AMD?s are at 400mhz (with the very popular Barton 2500+ at 333mhz). As for pricing, one case would be that it?s $166 for P4 2.4GHz at 800mhz compared to $160 for an Athlon 2.8GHz at 400mhz.

Correct me if I?m wrong, but assuming that one has a high-end motherboard that can handle such a powerful FSB, GPU, etc., wouldn?t the aforementioned P4 outperform the Athlon? Thus, wouldn?t it be a better buy in the long-run to go with the P4? AMD is certainly the value buy in most cases, but an 800mhz FSB seems to dwarf a 400mhz one.

there is no such thing as a 2.8 ghz athlon at 400 mhz, maybe you are thinking of a 2800+ and it too is 333 fsb. the 3000+ and the 3200+ are the only amd cpus with 400 mhz fsb. either way, if you have the money, i recommend the 2.4C esp. if you are gonna overclock, since it'll prolly get you to 3+GHz

there is no 2.8ghz amd....if there was it'd be the fastest evar!!! Your looking at a 2800+ which is around 2ghz sumthin

even tho i have an intel i'd say get an amd less than $100 then go crazy on the video card.....i just went midrange for both cpu/videocard....its performs well but nothing like a 2500+ with a 9800pro/FX5900

3DMark2001SE:
Radeon 8500 with Barton 2500+ @ 3200+ ... 9400+
Radeon 8500 with Intel 2.4C @ 3.2 GHz ... 11,000+

And I am talking about the same card literally.

That says it all. Intel is on top at this time.

still not bad for a $90 chip though

damn i want one... must resist going back to the light side....

however, d/ling that universal AMD clock reader, says my comp's a "3700+"

That 800MHz and 400MHz thing is a real joke now. Intel uses 800MHz just to stick with their RDRAM crappity and their "quad-pumped" CPU bus. It's actually still the same thing as the AMD 400MHz because AMD uses a DDR speed instead.

400MHz bus for AMD = 200MHz FSB
800MHz bus for Intel = 200MHz FSB

Therefore, 400 = 800

differen't bandwidths tho
beings one is quad pumped and the other is dual pumped

i just got me a 2500+

but yeah if you could clock an athlon to 2.8ghz it would beat any stock P4 in gaming benchs even if the fsb was like 266

well not with the 875/65 chipsets

Steve what FSB? If your running a 250 FSB (1000 qdr) then it makes a difference.

right now, 10.5 x 228 = 2394 = "~3700+"

i wanna see benchies w/ the same vid card

The only 400Mhz FSB Athlon (by default) is the 3200+. The 3000+ is 166*12,5 , 333Mhz FSB.
