P4 heatsink

I'm uprading the fan/heatsink on my 1.6A P4. the stock heatsink has that almost 1" square black thermal sheet on it. I'm going to use ArcticSilver3. Does it actually need to cover the whole surface of the CPU or just the less than 1/4" core area. Also is there any danger in getting thermal paste in that little hole in the corner of the CPU? Thanks for helping a rookie.

you have to cover the entire surface of the heatspreader.(btw it is the heatspreader that you see, the core is not visible unless you crack open the heatspreader.)
try not to get anything in that hole. I think it is for the gases to be released.

Its a thermal hole and DONT get grease in it.

the hole is really only needed at time of manufacture for venting.
it shouldn't matter if some thermal grease enters that hole!

From everything I've read on the subject the thermal hole is not supposed to get grease in it .

It doesn't matter if thermal grease gets into the hole. Under the heatspreader is a CPU that looks like a FCPGA chip. It won't do anything to the chip. If you don't believe me, pop off that heatspreader and you'll see what I mean.

A Celeron PPGA also has a heat spreader that can come off... not very easy though
