I intend to upgraded my system by buying a 1.6A P4 Northwood+ MSI 845 Ultra ARU + 256 MB Kingston DDR Ram from Newegg. I wonder if I can achieve 2.0 w/ stock HSF and just adjust the FSB .I'm satisfy @2.0Ghz since I'm new at Overclocking. Any ideal? Thank for all your help, I appreciate it

I had my 1.8a stable at 133fsb for 2.4ghz with 1.65v and 46c/61c prime95 temps on that board with retail hsf...retail hsf should be fine for 125fsb...likely the 1.6 can do that at 1.6 or less vcore voltage so your temps should be better then mine....If you want to do extreme ocing of over 140 fsb I would strongly consider aftermarket fan and some AS2 or 3...

prime95 here:
http://www.mersenne.org

it stresses your cpu and if there are any weaknesses in the cpu, memory, or power supply it will find it...I usually let it run 8-12 hours whenever I want to test an oc at a given vcore voltage...

Msi board is probably second best compared to the asus mobos...it may also require the wire trick to deal with reboot issues once you start bumping up the vcore and at higher fsb...

hey duvie, i also have reboot issues while overclocking ( i thought this was just a gigabyte 8irxp issue )...could u give me details of the wire trick..my 1.6a runs at 2800MHz stable 36c idle/56c load (during prime95)... i dont think the asus board could go that far 'cause voltage settings are more restricted on the Asus PB266

The voltages can go higher then on the msi board, plus it has the onboard .2v boost to take care of reboot issues you face...

The thing my asus p4s333 can't do is 175mhz likes yours....

Do a search for "wire trick"...it has been heavily discussed here, and there is a guide to follow to do it...It requires finding specific pins on the bottom of the cpu and tieing a single strand of wire between them to bridge them...this evidently makes the cpu request my voltage from the board....

I bought the exact same Board/CPU combo from newegg. The P41.6a/645 Ultra333 (MS-6547) is one of the best deals around right now. It overclocks like a charm easily to 2.13 GHZ (133fsb) with retail cooler and no voltage increase. It also runs really cool (high 30'/low 40's Celsius) and is stable as sh*t (3 weeks of hardcore dvd and mp3 encoding and not one problem ). All this for <$220 bucks. Go for it.

oh...u are talking about reboot issues due to instability of the system during high FSBs...am talking about the GA-8IRXP noot rebooting when u turn off the computer...

sorry..totaly different problem i mentioned...my rig doesnt randomly reboot while i'm in the middle of something just when i soft reboot (windows restart) it does start back up till i do a hard reset..

thanks anyway

No...This is not random reboots...this is when you restart or cold start sometimes it will not boot...fans will run and drives spin but monitor will loose signal and shut off and then nothing....It is not hardare stability it is simply the board at boot up not intiating enough vcore to the cpu to boot....

ah... so thats what happening...but i'm hesitant to do the wire trick since my vcore is already at 1.8v..

What you do is set the wire trick to boost it all the way to 1.8v and then leave bios at 1.5v, or do some combination....believe this seems to have worked for many many ppl...

can hit 2820 stable but wanted a nice round number
at 2.94Ghz stuff starts to become more unstable (if only i had more voltage settings)...MUST HAVE MORE VOLTAGE!!!

So what batch number do you have? I ask you this before but you gave me the code number(SL688). Since you got the Malay chip, I think it should start with a H or L. You can find this on the side of the box or on the chip itself. Since your chip o/c so nice I want to see what batch number to look for. Where did you get your by the way?

Thanks
