I've been out of the loop for months. Can someone catch me up on Intel's new labeling scheme, motherboards, and such?

socket 939 a64. amd is the better overall performer, and intel does not own amd at encoding anymore.

Intels switched to a number scheme not unlike opterons for their new socket LGA775. (510,520,530, etc). There is an overclocking lock at 15% with the new chipsets (915 and 925 iirc), but most manufacturers have come up with a way around it. So far, nothing good in my opinion. PCI-E is currently useless, and ddr2 performs poorly (although ocz supposedly has some 3.0-2-2-5 DDR2 in the works). Until I see some performance3 advantage with 775, I recommend 478 for intel users.

the overclocking lock is actually at 10%.

either way mobo manufacturers have found a way around it...

and i think that lga775 is promising especially with the new ddr2 3-2-2-8 timing ram that ocz is planning on releasing soon...

Intel may sneek up on AMD's partners incompitance (no PCIe, 25 chipsets) and AMD's throwing a myrid of confusing only to be dated socket types out there.

I'm watching intel overclockers with anticipation...and for DDR2 to prices fall.

Yes, they even cancelled the 4 ghz chip, so it looks like they have nothing coming out for quite a while. Why would anyone go that way ?

Right now, I wouldn't spend money on anything other than AMD64, socket 754 and 939 for a private machine.

PCI-E is currently a non-issue and will remain so for a very long time.
DDR2 is slow and expensive and there's a chance it will never be relevant outside Intel. DDR3 is what is desirable after DDR.

I had heard that, so I must not be too lost.

Are there any good articles on the new DDR2/P4's vs. Socket 939 A64? I've looked through Anand's articles and haven't found quite what I am looking for.

 Step1: Check out their DDR P4 vs. DDR2 P4 article.
Step2: check out their DDR P4 vs. DDR A64 articles.
I think you'll find the logic fairly linear.

Can you post links to the specific articles? I was diggint through the cpu, motherboard, and memory sections earlier. I'm not sure what ones you are referring to, or what section they are in. thanks!

Ok, I just had some dim recollections of having read something like that, but figured that since I'm about to go senile, you could put in the elbow grease yourself. But, ok I made the effort:

A64 939, the 3000+ overclocks very well on air. For less than U$200 it will beat higher priced P4's.

I'd get that or the 3200+, but I'm going to wait on PCI-e support and pickup a X700 or a 6600GT

PCI-E is not faster than AGP at this time (will it ever ???) So why wait ??

So when is DDR3 suppose to come into cycle?
I would assume not for awhile...?

Of course, we all know what assuming leads to.

But, yeah...

ddr3 is extremely expensive compared to ddr or ddr2, and i doubt that ddr3 will become mainstream for a long time.

SLI.............

Like I am going to spend $1000 on 2 6800 Ultra SLI cards instead of the $400 I spent on my x800pro. Maybe 2 years from now or more, but not anytime soon.
