The P4 will have a new core and bus soon. The MBs for it now will change soon too. Plus the memory it uses will not be around long. Todays P4 systems have no upgrade path at all.
I will not be buying one ever!

Just messin with ya. Some people might find the P4 of some use though, but personaly i don't care until I'm about to build a new system.

I agree that it's out of the realm of most users' price range. But if you're a gamer, I'm sorry, the P4 rocks. Look at that MAD memory bandwidth. Take into consideration I JUST put together my Thunderbird 1.1GHz system, I'm 100% unbiased against both Intel and AMD - they both have their advantages at this point. The fact of the matter is, the Thunderbird KT133/KT133A or DDR platforms are simply more affordable and just a better choice at this point for most users, especially if you don't have money to burn.

If you've got money to spend like crazy, and want the mad memory bandwidth for games that a P4 + RDRAM offers, go for it, but you're going to pay a pretty penny for it.

Ok so what games require such a fast machine. My slow machine Celeron 667 OC'ed to 752 with a TNT2 M64 graphics card will play every game I have tried at 768x1024x16 what more do you need. If the machine is faster than the game what good will extra speed do you.

As much as I agree, isn't this whole "P4 sux/Athlon rulez" thing getting a little tired?

To perry's point:

Sure, numerous tests have shown that the GTS2-32 card is memory bandwidth bound at around 650 Mhz pentiumIII (1024x768x32). But, that does not include loading all the eye candy and super-duper sounds, plus packet decoding and position during multiplayer.

So, I like having the extra 350 Mhz of overhead processing speed to handle those tasks. Keeps a smooth 90 FPS during multiplayer and never drops. Can't do that with lower speed procs as all the xtras demanded of the processor take away from the gaming experience.

trollin, trollin, trollin...boy your a$$ is swolen. RAWHIDE!

<edit> Sorry i bumped this thread. I just had to respond to perry's point.

Apples and oranges. AMD T-bird much closer mathes Intel PIII. P4 should not be compared to anything AMD makes at this point. How can you say what is better if they are different.

If you must know I favor AMD because of lack of $.

spidey07 That was a very good way to explain the advantages of more speed.

Its all on your own personal preference. I can play quake 3 just fine at 20 fps and don't have to be a whining baby about a few frames a sec, so therefore we all don't need to give our personal opinions to this extent. There is always someone who is going to love one brand over another, and different features than other chips have.

Quote from kyle at HardOCP

<< Did the P4 turn out to be a BowWow? Not even close. Did it leave us with our jaws on the floor? No, it did not do that either, but it certainly left us wanting some more of the same. I would personally have a hard time pulling a negative slant when looking at this CPU. >>

The P4 is junk. Intel's IA64 is junk.
Clock for clock an Athlon is faster then a P4.

as more software that is optimized for SSE2 and that is more memory intensive (quake4) wont that be the p4's time to shine? Granted right now the thunderbird wins hands down clock for clock but that is a ridiculous argument. AMD is the now.........p4 is the future unless AMD can keep up clockspeedwise IMHO

Hey, I bet if you saw me driving my FERRARI 550 MARANELLO you would say to yourself, that is a Overpriced P.O.S.!
Just because you can't afford one does'nt mean that it sucks.

... or if I saw someone driving a Yugo fitted with a farrari chassis, and the guy driving it had paid for it like you do for a farrari, I'd say it was an overprices POS. Probably were cool looking and all, no doubt about that...

every one needs to give this up. once you get to a GHZ...who gives a sh1t!!!!! its still just as fast...and what will you get about 3 or 4 more fps? what is wrong with you people? just drop it! nos440 has been telling us the p4 is good and everyone has jumped down is throat...but why? it isnt that bad! it isnt near as bad as people make it seem! yes, i have a duron, and i like it a lot. it was cheap, its fast, and i get 100fps in halflife with a voodoo5 on 3dfx minigl...so it works for me! and im sure a p4 could pull better results because its a good cpu. im not pro or con either chip, but this arguement is getting LAME
